After Skating, a Unique Olympic Event: Crying

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- For sheer spectacle, the Olympics offer the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony and dozens of medal ceremonies in between. For sheer awkwardness, they offer the kiss-and-cry area.

I like this lead because it is humorous. The story seems to be more of a feature so I enjoy that it allows for the lead to be more creative and lyrical. It doesn't include the who, what, or when, but I do not think that it was necessary for this instance. Because it is a feature I think that it makes it easier to cut the lead into more than one sentence. I don't think that the lead would have been more effective it it was only one sentence.

I agree, I think this lead is creative. It does a good job at explaining what the rest of the article will consist of without over doing it. It does not have a who, what, where, when and why approach yet it still is effective. We as readers obviously know who is in the kiss-and-cry area, when it takes place, what it is, where it is, and how it is! We watch it every day! It's my favorite part, and I'm so glad that they had an article dedicated to just that.

I love seeing the reactions, the emotions, the tears. It's that pure moment of awkward joy or torture as millions of viewers watch the athletes from the televisions. This lead is one of my favorites so far. The kiss-and-cry area really provides another form of entertainment that works well with the obvious entertainment of watching the Olympics. Props to the writer of this article who did something a little different than the others.

After reading the actual article I found the lead humorous as well. Unfortunately, I had to read the article to find out. I could forgive the lead for not having all the information if it was a more clear lead.
I had no idea what the article was talking about in this lead. I literally thought that the lead was claiming that at the Olympics they had a room for people to kiss and cry after they performed! This lead really needed more information and clarity.
Despite my frustration with the lead I do like it as a paragraph in the story. It would have been better to put following the lead. A lead should give me information about what they are talking about in a clear and concise matter. The first sentence states the obvious. There is no real news in it. The Olympics offer an opening and closing ceremony with medals in between…DUH! As stated before the second sentence is too vague by calling it a “kiss-and-cry area”.
