Student Employment
The last day to submit your spring time sheets for student employment payroll is Friday, May 15th, 2009. If time sheets are turned in after May 15th, you will not be paid under the student employment payroll. You will need to deal directly with your employer to be paid from department funds. This may cause a delay in receiving your paycheck.

Student Loans
The last day to increase or apply for a Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized, SELF, or PLUS loan for spring semester is Friday, May 1st, 2009.

Applying for May or Summer Session(s) Financial Aid
The last day to apply for May or Summer financial aid is June 5th, 2009. To be eligible for May or Summer financial aid, you must be enrolled for all summer classes by June 12, 2009.

Graduating students who have borrowed from federal loan programs should complete exit counseling before the end of spring semester.

This is the time of year when we mail out estimated financial aid awards to our prospective fall semester freshmen and transfer students. We mailed out our first round of letters today. We will continue to do this on a weekly basis as we receive new FAFSA’s from students. If you are expecting an award from us (this means you are admitted to Morris and have submitted your FAFSA to Morris) but don’t have one, please contact us.

When you receive your award, look it over carefully to make sure you understand everything and that you can determine your estimated balance due. Contact the financial aid office right away if you have any questions or concerns. This is the time to ask questions and make sure that you understand what your out-of-pocket cost will be.

Students are billed on a per semester basis. You can choose to pay the balance due each semester. If you cannot pay the entire bill at one time, consider the Payment Plan Option where you can make 3 installments toward your bill. Sometimes students/families need to borrow a loan to help cover the cost. Make sure you borrow from the federal loan programs first, and then if you have to, research the alternative loan programs to see which program best fits your family’s needs.

If you are interested in work study, but do not see it as a part of your financial aid award, please contact our office and we will check your eligibility. Just because it is not on your award does not mean you are not eligible to work and we have institutional work study jobs where departments have their own funding to hire students. Make sure you check out our student employment Web site.

Good luck with your college decision and of course, we hope to see you in Morris!

It’s no secret that students are facing a growing challenge in paying for higher education. The cost of attendance continues to rise, and this year you may be more anxious than ever about how you will afford to pay your college expenses.

We encourage you to address college affordability through careful budgeting and reducing expenses whenever possible. Check into on-campus student employment or finding an off-campus job to help with your personal expenses. Search and apply for scholarships. Determine how much you can pay out-of-pocket and don’t forget that Morris has a payment plan available. If you have to borrow a loan, do your homework regarding the various loan programs in order to borrow wisely. Make a plan to graduate in four years; the extra time and money you'll spend on an additional year in college is serious. Not only will you pay another year's worth of tuition, textbook costs, campus fees and other education expenses, but you won't be earning money in your first job or getting started in graduate school.

If you have any “special circumstances” or a financial situation that cannot be accurately reflected on your 2008 tax information, make an appointment or call to visit with a financial aid officer. We will review your situation to determine if there is anything we can do to help.

Here are some examples of the “special circumstances” that may be affecting your family.
•	Separation, divorce, or death has occurred since your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) was filed
•	Qualifying tuition expenses for private elementary or secondary education were incurred
•	Loss or reduction of employment
•	Loss of taxed/untaxed income or benefit
•	Loss of one-time income
•	Unusual, unreimbursed medical care expenses

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the financial aid office as soon as possible. We are here to support your success!

My how the time flies, it's FAFSA time again! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the only application needed to receive federal, state, and institutional financial aid at Morris.

If you are a new, transfer or returning student who did not file a FAFSA last year, you should complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you are unable to access the FAFSA online, you may obtain a paper FAFSA or file via the phone by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center toll-free at 1-800-433-3243.

Returning students who filed a FAFSA last year should file a renewal FAFSA online by UMM's priority deadline date of March 1, 2009. If your renewal FAFSA is submitted after March 1st you may not receive institutional grant funds.

If you/your parent(s) have not completed a 2008 Federal Tax Form, you may estimate your 2008 tax information or use your 2007 Federal Tax Form. Make corrections to the processed FAFSA online once you/your parent(s) have completed your 2008 Federal Tax Form(s).

If you have questions or need assistance, the Financial Aid staff will help you Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm by phone at 320-589-6035/1-800-992-8863, in-person at 105 Behmler Hall, or e-mail morrisfa@morris.umn.edu.
