This course is designed as an introduction to the fundamentals of experimental and media arts, primarily focused on the creative use of digital media to produce works of art. Students will develop their technical and imaginative skills, as well as a critical understanding of the relationships between visual/sound elements, communication, narratives, points of view, and viewers' perceptions. Class time will include lectures, tutorials, hands-on studio work, presentations, film screenings, discussions, collaboration, and project critiques.
1. To develop a foundational understanding of image and sound as a creative language to express ideas, emotions, and narratives.
2. To gain practical skills in digital media technology.
3. To become fluent in the basics of media arts production - how to use the "rules" effectively, and how to break them meaningfully.
4. To acquire new perspectives and knowledge about experimental and media works of art as both a viewer and an artist.
5. To be able to critically analyze, discuss, and fully engage with the elements of one's own work as well as the work of other artists.
6. To collaborate in creating an environment in which all participants feel they are respected, their work and ideas are valued, and they are encouraged to explore their own artistic "voice."
1. In class verbal participation is important and together with attendance and blog entries comprises 20% of the final course grade. Everyone is expected to actively participate in critiques and discussions, and write at least one blog journal entry per week.
2. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on due date. Late assignments will not be accepted under any conditions.
3. The intention of this course is to produce art and to foster open conversations about art and ideas. There are no "DUMB" comments or questions. It is crucial to the intellectual and artistic atmosphere of the class that each student participate vocally and add to the knowledge pool of the class. Please feel free to engage more reserved classmates in discussions and to give others a chance to talk.
4. Art majors are expected to draw conceptual relationships and connections between their art work and the ideas they are exploring in other art processes.
5. NO surfing the internet or email during class, NO cell phone conversations, rings or text messages in class. Any of the above will be treated as an absence from the day's class.
1. Attendance and participation in class are mandatory. Each student will begin the trimester with 20 points for attendance, and will lose points for each unexcused absence as follows:
1 missed class = 1 pt lost
2 missed classes = 4 pts lost
3 missed classes = 9 pts lost
2. A total of 5 missed class periods will constitute a failing grade and the student will be asked to withdraw from the course.
3. Arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving 10 minutes early is considered a missed class period.
4. Makeup for missed class periods is by prior arrangement only!
5. "Studio Days" are class work time. It is REQUIRED that students have their work in class and be working during these class periods.
Grading for this course is on a point system. There are a total of 100 points possible, broken down as follows:
Attendance and Participation -- 20 pts
Project #1 -- 10 pts
Project #2 -- 15 pts
Project #3 -- 25 pts
Final Project #4 -- 30 pts
University Grading Standards:
A: Achievement that is outstanding relative to the level necessary to meet the course requirements.
B: Achievement that is significantly above the level necessary to meet the course requirements.
C: Achievement that meets the course requirements.
D: achievement is worthy of credit even though it does not meet the course requirements.
S: Achievement that is satisfactory and equivalent to a C- or higher.
F/N: Represents failure (no credit) and signifies that the work was either (1) completed but at a level of achievement that was not worthy of credit or (2) was not completed and there was no agreement between the instructor and student that the student would be awarded an "I".
I: Incomplete - assigned at the discretion of the instructor when due to extra-ordinary circumstances, e.g. hospitalization, a student is prevented from completing the work on time. Requires a written agreement between the instructor and the student.
Academic dishonesty for any portion of the academic work for a course shall be grounds for awarding a grade of F or N for the entire course.
All activities in the University, including this course, are governed by the University of Minnesota Student Conduct Code. Students who engage in behavior that disrupts the learning environment for others may be subject to disciplinary action under the Code. In addition, students responsible for such behavior may be asked to cancel their registration (or have their registration cancelled).
Credits and Workload Expectations:
For the undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course. Students taking a four credit Studio Art course that meets for 6 hours a week would expect to spend 12 hours per week outside of the classroom.
Regis Center is open to undergraduate students Mon-Sat, 7am to 11pm. The building is closed Sundays. A security monitor patrols the Regis Center from 11pm to 2am, Mon-Sat. Undergrads who need to work beyond 11pm must be in the building at 11pm with a signed after-hours pass (passes are issued by your instructor). At least 2 students must work together in the same area to obtain an after-hours pass. Undergrads are not allowed in the Regis Center after 2am or on Sundays. The security monitor enforces this policy.
Please do not give out the doorcode or computer usernames and passwords for computers. Please do not prop open any doors in the Regis Center.

Video Camera - can be checked out of Equipment Room (required)
