4-Reading for Mon 2/14

The following is an essay written in 1999 by Malcolm Turvey about Dziga Vertov's 1929 experimental film Man With a Movie Camera that we'll be viewing in class on Monday. The reading explores our historical and philosophical relationship to the camera (in particular the motion picture camera) in the context of Vertov's theory and practice as a filmmaker. (There is a small bit of Russian/Soviet history and Kantian philosophy to wade through, please bear with that.) As our work in this class progresses to using cameras for expression and communication, we want to start thinking of cameras in a new way: as tools rather than toys (apps, etc).
