Chapter 7
Hey All,
I read Chapter 7 yesterday and thought I would comment on it while I had a little time before class.
I am liking the clear way in which Stead lays out his plans. The student examples and stories of the classroom keep me engaged.
I feel it is pretty important in our society today to be able to differentiate between fact and opinion and recognize the persuasive tactics that we are bombarded with everyday. I feel that a teacher should eleborate about the tools he mentions that nonfiction authors use and inform the students that these are the very same tactics that advertising firms use to get them to buy sugared cereal and Playstations.
Just my two cents,
Phil

I am definitely interested in learning more about the tools that nonfiction writers use. It seems increasingly important to me that educators work to prepare students to become informed consumers (both of information and materials).

I agree. I think it is important to teach students to recognize the tools writers use to persuade our thinking. One tool that was mentioned that seemed to have a big impact on the students was the use of emotions.

Wow! Isn't that the truth. Students definitely need to be able to critically analyze and question what they read and also be able to write well too. I am glad that I have this resource to help me reach my students. I have another really great non-fiction book too. I can't think of the title but it's by Stephanie Harvey and someone else. I'll try to remember soon.
