U of M School of Music announces 2010 Swan Composer Prize

The University of Minnesota School of Music is pleased to announce the 2010 Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize, a National Competition for New Works for Mixed Chorus. The 2009 Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize for Orchestra was awarded to Jonathan Kolm for his work Prophecies. Guidelines and an application for the competition are available on the School of Music website. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

SOM Alumna Libby Larsen to Receive George Peabody Medal

The Peabody Institute has announced that the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music in America will be presented to two individuals in 2010: Libby Larsen (School of Music alumna, composition, student of Dominick Argento) and James Levine.

Larsen, a composer and founding member of the American Composers Forum (originally the Minnesota Composers Forum), will receive the medal and speak at the Conservatory's graduation ceremony on May 27. Read more about her award in the Johns Hopkins Gazette.

SOM Student Denis Evstyukhin Competing in International Chopin Competition in Warsaw

Denis Evstyukhin (D.M.A. candidate, piano, student of Alexander Braginsky) is currently competing in the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, one of the oldest and most venerated piano competitions in the world. The competition began with 366 contestants. After surviving the initial cut, Evstyukhin traveled to Warsaw in April for the next selection by international jury where the number of contestants was reduced to 81. Evstyukhin will return to Warsaw in October with the other remaining contestants to continue the competition, with all expenses paid by the Polish government.
