Congratulations to SOM Tiffany Skidmore (Ph.D. candidate, composition, student of James Dillon), who composed the musical score to U of M President Kaler's welcome film, The First Year, "a romance of discovery," screened at the U of M Convocation for 5,500 first-year students on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Skidmore assembled a team of musicians, many of them U of M students, who recorded the music to the picture dada-style - they even named their group 'Insane Gopher Dada Orchestra.' Watch the film.

David Damschroder's (music theory) Harmony in Haydn and Mozart, the third book of his Harmony Project, has been published by Cambridge University Press. He is currently at work on the fourth volume, Harmony in Chopin, which formed the basis for "Formal/Harmonic Conflicts in Chopin's Mazurkas," a lecture delivered at the 17th Biennial International Conference on Nineteenth-Century Music, Edinburg, during June.

Laura Sindberg (music education) served as conductor of the International Wind Ensemble and Mountie/Ranger Bands at the 2012 International Music Camp, held at the International Peace Garden. Students were from Canada and the United States, along with several students from Surinam, Hong Kong, Sweden, and Croatia. The International Music Camp provides sessions for musicians and artists of all ages, gathered to study art and perform at a high level.

Michael Duffy (staff member/M.A. candidate, composition, student of James Dillon) was one of six composers chosen to work with Ensemble Dal Niente (winners of the 2012 Kranichstein Music Award for interpretation), composer Hans Thomalla, and cellist Lucas Fels of the Arditti Quartet, in a two-part composition workshop culminating in July 2012 at the 46th International Summer Music Courses in Darmstadt, Germany.

This summer Michael J. Krajewski (D.M.A. candidate, guitar and music education, student of Maja Radovanlija, Jeffrey Van, and Scott Lipscomb) accepted two positions teaching guitar at colleges in Minnesota. Beginning in fall 2012, Krajewski will teach full-time as assistant professor of music heading the guitar studies program at Minnesota State University Moorhead and will also revitalize the guitar program at St. Cloud State University teaching as an adjunct instructor.

Paula Gudmundson (D.M.A., 2012, flute, student of Immanuel Davis) was appointed visiting assistant professor of music at University of Minnesota - Duluth.
