U of M School of Music alumna/composer Abbie Betinis recently appeared on Minnesota Public Radio and performed the new Burt Family Carol (a Minnesota holiday tradition). Musicians included altos Laura Krider (SOM alumna & staff member) and Vicki Peters, as well as J. David Moore on the bodhran. Justin Knoepfel (D.M.A., 2010, viola, student of Korey Konkol) accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. He will act as head of the string area, teach applied viola and violin, and conduct the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra. Knoepfel has been in this position as a visiting professor the past several years, and was hired after an extensive national search.

Michael Hoffman (voice, student of John De Haan) was the runner-up in the Voices of Vienna Competition.

University of Minnesota School of Music alumnus, composer, conductor, producer, and copyist Ryan Truesdell (B.M., 2002, music education) has received three nominations in the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards for his record CENTENNIAL: Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans (ArtistShare) GIL EVANS PROJECT, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble for the album as a whole, Best Instrumental Arrangement for "How About You," and Best Arrangement Featuring a Vocalist for "Look to the Rainbow" featuring Luciana Souza.
Truesdell recently conducted a concert with University Jazz Ensembles, directed by professor Dean Sorenson, on Monday, December 3, 2012 featuring works from the CENTENNIAL album at Ted Mann Concert Hall. Truesdell is a former member of the University Jazz Ensembles and took arranging lessons with professor Sorenson.
