I think that holding hands can signify many things. The two most common messages that holding hands portray to me is either that of an affectionate or romantic relationship - showing public displays of affection, or that of supportand protection- when you see a child holding on to their parents hand or a friend lending their hand in a time of need.
Above all, I guess hand holding is left to each observer to interpret the meaning of it in the given circumstance.

For some reason I was not able to download the file. But as far as holding hands goes. I see holding hands as 3 things.
Ownership/commitment. This shows that 2 people are connected in some sort of bond, and show by holding hands that they are inseparable and "belong" to one another.
Protection. If a mother and a child are holding hands, the mother is guiding and protecting her child from harm.
Friendship. Although "friendship hand holding" comes in many forms like "Love friendship" and "buddy friendship" it all just shows that they are closely enbound with the feelings and trusts that accommodate with friendship and by holding hands it is a fun and expressionate way of being seen.
