Just Another Girl
This is a poem that I wrote after I had read a Cosmopolitan. This is not meant to be offensive. I do enjoy reading these types of magazines, but I do not let them conrol my lifestyle. The poem is based upon how they may restrict individuality. How do you think that Stargirl would react to these magazines? What about Susan? Do you in some way feel they restrict individuality? What other comments or opinions do you have?

First of all, I LOVE your poem! I think it's great. Secondly, I think that if Stargirl ever had a Cosmopolitan (or any magazine of the sort) in her hand, it would be entirely by accident, or else she would simply be looking for fillers. Stargirl would be disgusted with the garbage that fills fashion magazines. I think she would start a revolution in her school to ban the magazines. Susan on the other hand might secretly pick one up and try to figure out what she should be doing to fit in at school. After reading it though she would have a pit in her stomach, knowing that what she was doing was wrong and she was not being true to herself. No woman should be subject to these magazines!!!

Great poem!
I agree with Jessica. I don't think Stargirl would read Cosmo, and if she did, she would probably feel similiar to what your poem expresses. Susan, on the other hand, would probably look toward magazines like this for advice and guidance on how to be "normal".
I think its sad how much pressure the media puts on young people, especially girls, to look and act a certain way. I know I'm guilty of flipping through the pages of magazines or watching tv and being jealous of the way models and celebrities look. But then I remember that they have personal trainers and airbrushes. It's all fake.
I think it gets easier to accept yourself and your individuality as you get older.

That was a good poem. Very interesting and I think it relates very well with the book Stargirl. I definitly think that Susan wouldn't let this poem effect her because she would assume that people saw here as popular, pretty and flawless. Stargirl on the other hand might take this poem to be offensive but I think that she would definitely agree with the last two stanzas of the poem. She is for sure her own person and she could care less what other people think of her. She is unique, confident and not scared of who she is... her own individual. Deep down I think she's trying to portray this to other people, help them be more comfortable in who they are but most of her peers sluff her off and think she's a weirdo.

I agree with these girls, Stargirl would have no reason to read any of those types of magazines. Susan may read them for clothing ideas or ideas about how she should act around her peers, but I would like to believe that even Susan would not take the ideas to heart. I think your poem was a great way to show the differences in personalities between the girls in this story!

I think that Stargirl prides herself on her uniqueness, and because of that, she isn't drawn to magazines that sell a "popular" image. She has her own conception of what it is to be beautiful, cool, and even though this runs contrary to what might be the norm, this is what makes her special. As someone who can walk through the halls of Mica High, wearing outrageous outfits and speaking her mind, she is free from enslaving trends. I like how your poem questions the influences magazines such as Cosmo have on teen girls.

Stargirl would think these magazines were dumb and probably wouldn't read them. She might flip through some of the pages just to look at certain things, but she wouldn't get caught up in the whole what to wear, how to look part of the magazines. Susan, on the other hand would love this magazine and probably would try to get a lot of tips from it so she could better understand how to be accepted. I love this poem. It shows what these magazines are really all about, and the confusion and insecurity they can have on any individual. Also, this poem is really funny...that cucumber goes where?

I feel as though Stargirl would agree with this poem. I think that she would encourage others to steer away from the media's vision of who or what a girl should be. She would encourage other girls to be themselves, like herslef. She is her own, unique person and she definetly has left a mark on everyone!

The poem was great and I definately saw how it relates right in with this theme. I feel that if Stargirl read this, she would love it! It would be a definite eye-opener for her. She would strongly agree and relate with the struggles of society (school) restricting your individiuality. The poem would even possibly make Stargirl reach out and try to encourage more girls and boys to be their unique selves!

I would think that star girl(the book)would be a great book to the ages between 13-25.Her character i like becuase she has the freedom to do anything, not that i'am saying nobody else does, but she feels comfortable and also to wear the most unique clothes. In Mica High people ask her why she is soo different and how she knows everyones birthdays?the book is great to teen guys, love the book!l8er!=)
