American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships and Grants °
Fellowships of up to $23,000 support up to a year, and grants of approximately $5,000 support one to three months, of research, study, or creative work in one or more Scandinavian countries. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply; must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Some projects may require proficiency in the language of the host country; for other projects, proficiency may not be necessary but some ability in the language is desirable. Graduate students planning dissertation research are given priority for the fellowships, whereas the grants are considered especially suitable to graduating seniors and college graduates. Australia Endeavour Postgraduate Awards °
Provides financial support for international students from most countries to complete a Masters degree or a PhD in Australia. Students may conduct coursework or research in any field of study at an Australian college or university. Award covers tuition, fees, monthly stipend, travel allowance, and health insurance for up to two years for Masters degree or up to four years for PhD. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree at the time of application. Awardees must gain admission to a Masters or PhD course in Australia for the year their Award program commences. Applicants should have a well-defined study or research program and write a proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Australia and the applicant's home country. Community service experience is advantageous. Awardees are expected to foster ongoing collaboration and cooperation with Australia and participate in the academic or wider community in their home country on return from their program. Boren National Security Education Program Scholarships °
Supports a term or year of study abroad, for the purpose of equipping Americans with an understanding of less commonly studied languages and cultures in regions critical to U.S. interests. NSEP emphasizes the importance of language study as a major component of the study abroad program. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be an integral part of the proposal. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records, language and international interests. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply for the undergraduate scholarships. (Boren Fellowships are also offered for GRADUATE STUDENTS, who should visit the Office of International Programs website for further information.) Carries a one-year service requirement. Churchill Scholarships °
For one year of graduate study in engineering, math, or science at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, must be age 19-26 and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award; must have outstanding academic record (typical GPA of 3.9 or higher) and research experience. At least 14 scholarships are awarded nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Award includes generous living allowance, tuition and fees, travel grant; approximate value $45,000. Institutional endorsement is required; the U of M-Twin Cities may endorse up to two candidates. Applicants wishing to begin graduate study in the fall immediately following graduation should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their JUNIOR year; applicants who intend to take a year off before beginning graduate study should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their SENIOR year. Commonwealth Scholarships °
Provides opportunities for citizens of Commonwealth countries to pursue graduate study in other Commonwealth countries, including the United Kingdom. Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals °
Year-long work-study program beginning in July provides opportunities for young adults to gain cultural understanding, education, and professional experience in Germany. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, age 18-24 at the start of the program; high school, college (FRESHMAN through SENIOR), or GRADUATE STUDENT. Must have coursework and some practical experience relevant to the intended internship field. Exchange Program includes classroom instruction and an internship experience. Covers international and in-country travel, university tuition, a living stipend, and accommodations with a host family or in a student residence. Preferred fields include business, technology, engineering, and agriculture. All fields may apply. German language proficiency is preferred but not required. 75 awards nationwide. Critical Language Scholarships °
U.S. government-sponsored scholarships support intensive summer language study in the critical need languages; Azerbaijani, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu, at approved language institutes abroad. Applicants must be U.S. citizens; may be FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS. All fields of study are eligible. Some institutes have language prerequisites, but many are open to beginners. All program costs are covered, including travel, room and board, instruction, visa fees, and entrance fees for program activities. DAAD EMGIP Bundestag Internships °
Offers two-month-long internship opportunities in the German parliament. Applicants should be advanced undergraduates (JUNIOR or SENIOR) or GRADUATE STUDENTS (excluding PhD students) in fields such as political science, international relations, law, history, economics, or German. Applicants must have strong German language skills; some knowledge of the German legislative process; outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must be U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or international student enrolled full time in the US or Canada. DAAD InternXchange Internships °
Supports a 12-week summer internship program in Berlin for Journalism students. Includes six weeks of study at the Freie Universitat Berlin, followed by an intensive 5-week internship with a German media organization and a one-week educational tour. Intended primarily for undergraduates (FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, SENIOR) but recent GRADUATES and GRADUATE STUDENTS may also apply. Must be majoring in Journalism or a related field; must have "advanced intermediate" proficiency in German; must have some prior experience in practical journalism and a demonstrated interest in German affairs. DAAD Study Scholarships °
For one academic year, with possible extension for a second year, of graduate study in Germany. Applicants must be full-time enrolled SENIORS, recent GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in any field of study; U.S. or Canadian citizen or foreign national meeting certain conditions; have a well-defined study project. An invitation from a faculty member in Germany is preferred. Applicants in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a good command of German. DAAD Summer Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) °
Supports 6-12-week summer internships working on scientific research projects at top research institutions in Germany. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS studying biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, or engineering. German language skills are helpful but not required; most projects may be carried out in English. Monthly stipend of EUR 650, health insurance, assistance arranging housing. DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships °
For 4-10 months of undergraduate study, senior thesis research, and/or internship in Germany. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS in any field of study at any North American university; must have outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must possess outstanding academic record and personal integrity; demonstrate an interest in contemporary German and European affairs; and have well-defined plans for their time in Germany. Citizenship is open. Preference is given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university.German language proficiency is not required but applicants must have language skills commensurate with their study and research needs. DAAD University Summer Course Grants °
For 3-4 week summer courses at German universities, which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political, or economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS with outstanding academic records; U.S. or Canadian citizens or foreign nationals who have been full-time students at North American universities for at least one year; must have completed at least 4 semesters of German or equivalent. Emigre Memorial German Internship Program (EMGIP) °
Supports one- to three-month internships in the German State Parliaments, in fall, spring, or early summer. Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens age 30 or younger, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS, with at least two years of study in international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, or European studies. Must have high-intermediate German language skills and some relevant practical experience. U.S. participants receive a stipend of up to 500 Euro per month. English Program in Korea (EPIK) °
Supports one year (52 weeks) as an English teacher in a Korean public school. Must be a citizen of one of six designated English-speaking countries (including the U.S.), must hold at least a bachelor's degree, must have excellent English language skills and the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and living. Freeman Asia Program °
Provides need-based support for American undergraduates to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia for a semester, summer, or year. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply. Awards are for up to $7,000, with the amount varying depending on the length of study and student need. Carries a small service commitment to promote study abroad in Asia upon return. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with demonstrated financial need; GPA of 2.8 or higher; must have at least one term of enrollment remaining at the U after returning from abroad. Must gain acceptance to an academic study abroad program through the U or another US. college or university. Must have little or no prior experience in the proposed country of study. Fulbright UK Summer Institutes °
Three-six week summer programs at world-class UK universities for FRESHMAN and SOPHOMORES who are US citizens with strong academic records. Leadership, initiative, character, adaptability, and ambassadorial qualities are highly valued, along with an interest in the UK and its culture. Fulbright US Student Program Scholarships °
Supports one year of study, research, creative work, or English teaching in one of approximately 130 foreign countries. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with the majority of their undergraduate education in the U.S.; must meet country-specific language proficiency requirements; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. SENIORS, RECENT GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. At least 1300 awards nationwide. Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships °
Supports undergraduate students planning to participate in rigorous education abroad programs during the 2013-2014 academic year or summer 2013. FEA will award $5,000 scholarships to students who study abroad for one semester and up to $10,000 for two semesters of study abroad; students who study abroad for other lengths of time (minimum of four weeks) will receive a proportionate amount. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be committed to supporting education abroad in their campus community through work with the FEA and their campus education abroad staff upon return. Gates Cambridge Scholarships °
For one or more years of study at Cambridge University toward a graduate or second undergraduate degree. SENIORS and GRADUATES who are citizens of any country except the U.K. may apply. German Universities of Applied Sciences Study & Internship Program °
Supports one semester of study abroad at one of Germany's applied sciences universities, followed by a six month paid professional internship. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS in engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, or social work; U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions. Must have a well-defined study proposal and an interest in contemporary German and European affairs. Must be age 32 or younger at the start of the grant period. German language proficiency is helpful but not required. Includes a one-semester scholarship, monthly internship stipend of EUR 650 and travel grant. Gilman International Scholarships °
For a semester, summer, or academic year of study abroad worldwide, for undergraduates with significant financial need. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply. Awards are for up to $5000, with the amount varying depending on the length of study and student need. Gilman Scholars studying certain languages may also apply for an additional Critical Need Language Supplement of up to $3000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, Pell Grant recipients, must be applying to or accepted by a study abroad program of at least 4 weeks in length for which the U will award academic credit. Japanese Exchange & Teaching Programme (JET) °
Supports one year of work in Japan as an Assistant English Language Teacher, Coordinator of international exchanges, or Sports Exchange Advisor. Applicants must be SENIORS or GRADUATES, U.S. citizens, with a strong interest in Japan. Japanese language proficiency is not required for most positions. Killam Fellowships to Canada °
For a semester or year of undergraduate study in Canada. The program encourages exchange between Canada and the U.S. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, full-time undergraduates (in most cases SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR) with outstanding academic records. Fellowships are $10,000 for a year or $5000 for a semester. Fellows also participate in two exchange events, for which expenses are covered. Approximately 20 fellowships nationwide. Luce Scholars Program For Professional Internships in Asia °
For one-year internships in Asia. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, not more than 29 years old, and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Not intended for students whose academic concentration is in any aspect of Asian studies, or who have previous experience living in Asia. Selection criteria include a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Luce Scholars receive a generous living stipend and internship placement. 15-18 awards nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the U of M-Twin Cities. Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden °
Administered by the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, this scholarship provides up to $10,000 for up to a year of study or research in Sweden, with some attention to Swedish America or relations between the U.S and Sweden. FRESHMAN through SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Must have a working knowledge of Swedish language. The scholarship will not be awarded for language study alone, although language study may be part of the proposal. Marshall Scholarships °
For one to two years of study at any British university, leading to a graduate degree or two one-year graduate degrees in any field. Extension for a third year is possible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Selection criteria include exceptionally strong academics, leadership, and the potential to be an outstanding citizen ambassador to the UK. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Applicants may not be more than two years beyond graduation, and may have begun graduate study. Scholarship includes tuition and fees plus allowances for living, books, and travel to and from the UK (approximate value: 23,000 GBP per year). 33 scholarships nationwide. NanoJapan International Research Experience for Undergraduates °
Provides 12-week summer research experience in nanotechnology for FRESHMAN or SOPHOMORE student in Japan; no prior Japanese language or culture study is required. Participants earn 1 credit through Rice University. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; should have a demonstrated interest in the field of nanotechnology as it relates to THz dynamics of nanostructures; no prior research experience is required. Women and students underrepresented in STEM disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply. Award includes stipend, international airfare, 3-week language and culture orientation. National Institutes of Health Oxford-Cambridge Biomedical Research Scholars Program °
Supports graduate study leading to a PhD in the biomedical sciences through a partnership between NIH and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Students spend approximately half their time at the NIH in Bethesda, MD and the other half at Oxford or Cambridge. Scholars may also pursue a combined MD/PhD through one of NIH's American medical school partners. SENIORS and GRADUATES may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with outstanding academic records and exceptional promise for a career in biomedical research; must have prior coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Must have previous laboratory research experience. Must complete an undergraduate degree prior to the start of the program. The award includes a stipend of approximately $25,000 per year, health benefits, and other academic support. Approximately 14 are awarded nationwide. North American Language and Culture Assistants in Spain °
Supports an academic-year English teaching assistantship at a primary or secondary school in Spain. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS or GRADUATES, U.S. or Canadian citizens, with intermediate or advanced proficiency in Spanish. Rhodes Scholarships °
For one to three years of study at Oxford University leading to a graduate or, in certain cases, a second undergraduate degree in any field. American Rhodes applicants must be U.S. citizens, age 18-23 on October 1 in the year of application; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award; may have begun graduate work. (For a list of other Rhodes-eligible countries of citizenship, see the non-U.S. citizen's page at www.rhodesscholar.org/.) Selection criteria include proven intellectual and academic achievement; integrity of character; interest in and respect for one's fellow human beings; the ability to lead; and the energy to use one's talents to the full. Teaching Assistantship Program in France °
Supports a 6-9-month teaching assistantship in France at a primary or secondary school or teacher's college. Applicants must be JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATES, age 20-29. U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who are not French citizens are eligible. Must be proficient in French. Stipend is EUR 965 per month. Approximately 1500 awards per year. ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship °
Supports 2 to 3 months of research at a Swiss university. Applicants must be currently enrolled SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS and must provide written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that she/he will accept you for a research stay in his/her group. Knowledge of German, French, or Italian is helpful but not required. Approximately $1000 per month scholarship, of which half is paid upon completion of the research stay. Whitaker International Program Undergraduate Scholarships °
Provides funding for undergraduate biomedical engineering (BME) students to conduct a field-relevant activity abroad. Applicants can propose to intern, conduct research, take BME coursework, or directly enroll at an institution that offers outstanding BME training. Grantees may carry out their study abroad programs at a host institution in any country outside of the U.S., except Canada, but must establish a host relationship in their country of choice. A letter of support from the host is required. Grants can be awarded for one semester (up to a $7,500 scholarship) or one academic year (up to a $10,000 scholarship). Applicants must be FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES OR JUNIORS; U.S. citizens or permanent residents; must demonstrate a need for financial support; and must have at least one semester remaining upon return from their time abroad.
