  • American Association of University Women International Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12.01 (for 2009-10 fellowships)

    Supports full-time graduate study or research for women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, are completing or have completed an undergraduate degree, plan to pursue a U.S. graduate program, and intend to return to their home countries to pursue a professional career. English proficiency is required. Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of women and girls in the home country. SENIORS and GRADUATES may apply.   • Astronaut Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.03 (Expected, for 2009-10 scholarships)

    For SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS in engineering or the natural or applied sciences. No special consideration is given to students in astronautical engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with excellent academic records and research experience who have shown initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field. The scholarship is for $10,000 with the possibility of renewal beyond the first year. Applicants must be nominated by a faculty member.   • Beinecke Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.23 (U of M deadline)

    For graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Applicants must be JUNIORS who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise; U.S. citizens or nationals; and must have received need-based financial aid. Amount of award is approximately $32,000. 22 awards nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the U of M-Twin Cities. The U may endorse one candidate.   • Boren National Security Education Program Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected, for 2009-10 scholarships)

    Supports a term or year of study abroad, for the purpose of equipping Americans with an understanding of less commonly studied languages and cultures in regions critical to U.S. interests. NSEP emphasizes the importance of language study as a major component of the study abroad program. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be an integral part of the proposal. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records, language and international interests. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply for the undergraduate scholarships. (Boren Fellowships are also offered for GRADUATE STUDENTS, who should visit the Office of International Programs website for further information.) Carries a one-year service requirement. Approximately 150 are awarded nationwide. An institutional review and interview process is conducted on campus for undergraduate applicants.   • Churchill Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04 (Expected U of M preliminary deadline for 2010-11 scholarships)

    For one year of graduate study in engineering, math, or science at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, must be age 19-26 and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. Must have outstanding academic record (GPA of 3.7 or higher) and research experience. 10-15 scholarships are awarded nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Award includes generous living allowance, tuition and fees, travel grant; approximate value $44,000. Institutional endorsement is required; the U of M-Twin Cities may endorse up to two candidates. Applicants wishing to begin graduate study in the fall immediately following graduation should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their JUNIOR year; applicants who intend to take a year off before beginning graduate study should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their SENIOR year.   • Commonwealth Scholarships

    Provides opportunities for citizens of Commonwealth countries to pursue graduate study in other Commonwealth countries, including the United Kingdom.   • Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12.01 (for 2009-10 awards)

    Year-long program beginning in July provides opportunities for young adults to gain cultural understanding, education, and professional experience in Germany. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, age 18-24 at the start of the program; high school, college (FRESHMAN through SENIOR), or GRADUATE STUDENT. Includes classroom instruction and an internship experience.  Award covers international and in-country travel, seminars, and accommodations with a host family. Preferred fields include business, technology, engineering, and agriculture. All fields may apply. German language proficiency is strongly recommended but not required. 75 awards nationwide.   • Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected U of M deadline, for graduate study beginning Fall 2009)

    Provides up to $50,000 per year for up to six years of graduate or professional school in the U.S. or abroad. Applicants must be college SENIORS or recent GRADUATES with GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students who have already begun graduate study are not eligible. Citizenship is open. Must have significant financial need with parents’ assets and income factored in. Selection criteria include academic achievement and intelligence, will to succeed, leadership and public service, and participation in or strong appreciation of the arts and humanities.   • DAAD Study Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.09.08 (for 2009-10 scholarships)

    For one year, with possible extension for a second year, of graduate study in Germany. Applicants must be full-time enrolled SENIORS, recent GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in any field of study; U.S. or Canadian citizen or foreign national meeting certain conditions; have a well-defined study project. An invitation from a faculty member in Germany is preferred. Applicants in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a good command of German.   • DAAD University Summer Course Grants

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.15 (for summer 2009 grants)

    For 3-4 week summer courses at German universities, which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political, or economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Applicants must be JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS with outstanding academic records; U.S. or Canadian citizens or foreign national meeting certain conditions; must have completed at least 4 semesters of German or equivalent.   • De Karman Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31 (for 2009-10 fellowships)

    Supports one year of undergraduate study or graduate study in the United States in any field, with special consideration to candidates in the Humanities. Applicants may be outstanding JUNIORS or PH.D. CANDIDATES who are U.S citizens or foreign students already enrolled in U.S. institutions.   • Department of Energy Graduate Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected, for fellowships beginning Fall 2009)

    Offered in the areas of computational science and nuclear security stewardship science. Both provide generous support for up to four years towards a Ph.D in an appropriate program. Applicants must be exceptional SENIORS, GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in their first or second year of study. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.   • Department of Homeland Security Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected, for 2009-10 scholarships)

    Supports undergraduate or graduate study in science, social science, engineering, and technology fields essential to homeland security. Undergraduate Scholarship applicants must be SOPHOMORES; Graduate Fellowship applicants must be SENIORS, GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in their first year of study toward a Masters or Ph.D. Must be US citizen with GPA of 3.30 or higher and pursuing a degree in an eligible field. Carries a summer internship commitment. Must indicate a willingness to work for a DHS agency or affiliate after completing education. Award covers tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend.   • Ford Foundation Diversity Predoctoral Fellowships

    For U.S. citizens who will pursue (or are pursuing) graduate study in PhD or ScD programs in many disciplines, as preparation for careers as college professors. Provides $20,000 per year for up to three years. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Positive factors for selection include membership in one of several underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; superior academic achievement; and commitment to diversity.   • Fulbright Grants

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.09.08 (U of M final deadline for 2009-10 grants; submission by August 8, 2008 is recommended in order to receive feedback)

    Supports one year of study, research, creative work, or English teaching in one of approximately 130 foreign countries. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with the majority of their undergraduate education in the U.S.; must meet country-specific language proficiency requirements; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. SENIORS, RECENT GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. At least 1300 awards nationwide.   • Gates Cambridge Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.10 (Expected, for application to Cambridge University and scholarship consideration)

    For one or more years of study at Cambridge University toward a graduate or second undergraduate degree. SENIORS and GRADUATES who are citizens of any country except the U.K. may apply. Must have exceptional academic achievement; must hold a bachelor’s degree by the beginning of the award period. Normally must be under age 30. Scholarship includes tuition and fees, generous living allowance, some travel. To be considered for the Gates (and other Cambridge Trust Scholarships), candidates must apply to Cambridge through the normal admission procedures by the appropriate deadline.     Supports graduate study by women in computer science, computer engineering, and related technical fields. SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS in relevant fields may apply.   • Hispanic Scholarship Fund

    For undergraduate or graduate study in any field. Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage as defined by the Scholarship Fund, U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident, with GPA of 3.0 or higher. FRESHMAN through SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,000.   • Huygens Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02.01 (Applicants must meet earlier deadlines for admission to Dutch universities.)

    For up to two years of study in the Netherlands, leading to a master's degree from a Dutch university. Applicants must be SENIORS or recent GRADUATES with outstanding academic records. Must be age 35 or younger at the start of the program. Citizens of all countries may apply. The language requirement depends on the program, but for many programs English is sufficient. Scholarship includes tuition and generous living and travel allowances (average value is EUR 22,000). Apply directly to your preferred university in the Netherlands and indicate in the application that you would like to be considered for a Huygens Scholarship.   • Javits Fellowship Program

    Supports one to four years of graduate study (Ph.D. or M.F.A.) in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences at U.S. institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents; SENIORS or first-year GRADUATE STUDENTS; must have strong academic records and financial need. GRE scores and FAFSA required.   • Kinley Memorial Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12 (Expected deadline for 2009-10 fellowships)

    For advanced study in the U.S. or abroad, in such fields as fine arts, architecture, and urban or regional planning. May be used for study at an approved institution, with a private teacher, or for independent study. Applicants must be college GRADUATES or GRADUATE STUDENTS who hold a bachelor’s degree at the time of application in Architecture, Art, Dance, Landscape Architecture, Music, Theatre, or Urban and Regional Planning. Criteria include high achievement in the applicant’s field, seriousness of purpose, high moral character, and the strength of the proposal. Three major Fellowships will be awarded ranging from $6000-$22,000 depending on the subject pursued. Up to three additional fellowships of lesser amounts may be awarded. Preference will be given to applicants who are under twenty-five years of age. Application includes writing samples and/or portfolio.   • Lorde Scholarships

    Scholarships of $1000 are awarded annually to ten or more lesbians and gay men of African descent who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs and are making significant contributions to their communities.   • Madison Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.03.01 (for fellowships beginning Fall 2009)

    For two years of study in the U.S. in a master's program leading to a career in secondary school teaching of American history, government, or social studies. The proposed graduate program must include coursework in Constitutional history. Must be U.S. citizen or national. SENIORS and recent GRADUATES may apply for the Junior Fellowships; employed teachers who which to pursue a graduate degree part-time may apply for Senior Fellowships.   • Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.15 (for 2009-10 scholarships)

    Administered by the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, this scholarship provides up to $10,000 for up to a year of study or research in Sweden. FRESHMAN through SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS who are U.S. citizens or residents may apply. Must have a working knowledge of Swedish language. The scholarship will not be awarded for language study alone, although language study may be part of the proposal.   • Marshall Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04 (Expected U of M deadline for scholarship support beginning Fall 2010)

    For two years of study at any British university, leading to a graduate degree or two one-year graduate degrees in any field. Extension for a third year is possible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Selection criteria include outstanding academics (minimum 3.7 GPA), distinction of intellect and character, seriousness of purpose, and potential to make a significant contribution to society. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Applicants may not be more than two years beyond graduation, and may have begun graduate study. Scholarship includes tuition and fees plus allowances for living, books, and travel to and from the UK (approximate value: 20,000 GBP per year). Approximately 40 scholarships nationwide.   • Math for America Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02 (Expected, for fellowships beginning Fall 2009)

    Provides generous support for graduate education plus additional financial incentives and mentoring to prepare for a career as a mathematics teacher in the nation’s public schools. Fellows receive full scholarships for teacher preparation programs at Columbia, NYU, or Bard College. SENIORS and college GRADUATES may apply. Must have taken at least 18 credits of mathematics at the calculus level or higher; math major or minor not required. Must take specific standardized math tests.   • Mitchell Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04 (Expected U of M deadline for 2010-11 scholarships)

    For one year of study in Ireland or Northern Ireland, usually to complete a one-year graduate degree in any field. Must be U.S. citizen, age 18-29 on October 1 in the year of application; must hold a bachelors degree by the beginning of the award and may have begun graduate study. Selection criteria include superior record of academic excellence, leadership, and public service. Approximately 12 awards nationwide. Institutional endorsement is required for currently enrolled students. applicants wishing to study in Ireland during the year immediately following graduation should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their JUNIOR year; applicants who intend to take a year off before studying in Ireland should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their SENIOR year.   • National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected, for awards beginning Fall 2009)

    Awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of Department of Defense interest in science or engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals. SENIORS, GRADUATES, or first- or second-year GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply; must have outstanding academic ability; must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period.   • National Institutes of Health Oxford-Cambridge Biomedical Research Scholars Program

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected deadline for support beginning Fall 2009)

    Supports graduate study leading to a PhD (or combined MD/PhD) in the biomedical sciences through a partnership between NIH and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Students spend approximately half their time at the NIH in Bethesda, MD and the other half at Oxford or Cambridge. SENIORS and GRADUATES may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with outstanding academic records and exceptional promise for a career in biomedical research; must have prior coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Must have previous laboratory research experience. Must complete an undergraduate degree prior to the start of the program.   • Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships and Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02 (Expected, for fellowships beginning Fall 2009)

    Provides generous support at the undergraduate and/or graduate level for students representing all ethnic and social backgrounds who are interested in becoming Foreign Service Officers. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with GPA of 3.2 or higher. Consideration is given to financial need and to significant leadership and service activities. Applicants for the Foreign Affairs Fellowships must be current SOPHOMORES; applicants for the Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowships must be SENIORS or GRADUATES seeking admission to an appropriate graduate program for the following fall.   • Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship Program (PPIA)

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11 (Expected)

    Provides training, mentoring, and financial support to encourage students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue graduate study and careers serving the public good. Applicants must be JUNIORS, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with a demonstrated interest in public service, and able to contribute to diversity of perspectives. Consideration is given to financial need. Fellows participate in a seven-week Junior Summer Institute (tuition, books, housing, meals, and a $1000 stipend are included) and receive a $5000 scholarship for graduate study in public policy or international affairs at a PPIA-affliliated institution.   • Rhodes Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04 (Expected U of M deadline for scholarship support beginning Fall 2010)

    For one to three years of study at Oxford University, leading to a graduate or, in certain cases, a second undergraduate degree in any field. American Rhodes applicants must be U.S. citizens, age 18-23 on October 1 in the year of application; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award; may have begun graduate work. (For a list of other Rhodes-eligible countries of citizenship, see the “non-U.S. citizens” page at www.rhodesscholar.org/.) Selection criteria include proven intellectual and academic achievement; integrity of character; interest in and respect for one’s fellow human beings; the ability to lead; and the energy to use one’s talents to the full.   • Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02 (Application deadlines are set by the clubs; expect FEBRUARY or EARLY MARCH 2009 deadlines for scholarships for 2010-11.)

    The world's largest privately funded scholarship program for international education: hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year for students from nearly 100 host countries, including the U.S., to study abroad in other host countries. The purpose of the program is to further international understanding and friendly relations. Several types of scholarships are offered, including academic year scholarships, multi-year scholarships, and scholarships for 3-6 months of intensive language study and cultural immersion. Awards range from $10,000 to $23,000, depending on the type and length of the program. Some of the scholarships have language proficiency requirements. SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, AND GRADUATES may apply. Must be citizen of a country with Rotary Clubs.     Offered by the Environmental Protection Agency for master’s and doctoral study in environmental fields, normally for 2-3 years. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, must have an undergraduate degree in hand and be accepted to an appropriate graduate program prior to the start of the award period.   • Soros Fellowships for New Americans

    Provides up to two years of support for graduate or professional school in the United States in any field. Applicant must be either a permanent resident, a naturalized U.S. citizen, or the child of two parents who are naturalized citizens; under 31 years old at the time of application; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. Selection criteria include strong academics and character traits such as creativity, originality, initiative, a capacity for accomplishment, and a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.   • Truman Scholarships

    Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.07 (U of M deadline for 2009 scholarships)

    Awarded to undergraduates for graduate study leading to a career in government or elsewhere in public service. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals; currently enrolled JUNIORS in the upper quarter of their class; should have a strong record of service or activism and leadership, as well as excellent communication skills. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school and participate in a Truman Scholars Leadership Week in the summer after the Junior year. An optional Summer Institute in Washington D.C. is offered in the summer after graduation. The scholarship carries a service obligation. 70-75 scholarships are awarded nationwide.
