°Supports one year of study, research, creative work, or English teaching in one of approximately 130 foreign countries. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with the majority of their undergraduate education in the U.S.; must meet country-specific language proficiency requirements; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. °For one academic year, with possible extension for a second year, of graduate study in Germany. Applicants must be full-time enrolled SENIORS, recent GRADUATES, or GRADUATE STUDENTS in any field of study; U.S. or Canadian citizen or foreign national meeting certain conditions; have a well-defined study project. An invitation from a faculty member in Germany is preferred. Applicants in the arts, humanities, and social sciences should have a good command of German. Supports one- to three-month internships in the German State Parliaments, in fall, spring, or early summer. Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens age 30 or younger, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS, with at least two years of study in international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, or European studies. Must have high-intermediate German language skills and some relevant practical experience. U.S. participants receive a stipend of up to 500 Euro per month. °Supports one to four years of graduate study (Ph.D. or M.F.A.) in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences at U.S. institutions. Fellowship consists of an institutional payment (in lieu of tuition and fees) and a stipend of up to $30,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents; SENIORS or first-year GRADUATE STUDENTS; must have strong academic records and financial need. GRE scores and FAFSA required. °Supports six to nine months at a participating non-profit organization in Washington D.C addressing peace and security issues. Fellows receive a stipend of $2,300 per month and health insurance, plus travel expenses to D.C. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the fellowship and may have begun graduate study. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Preference is given to U.S. citizens, but foreign nationals residing and eligible to work in the U.S. may also apply. Selection criteria include academic excellence, prior study relevant to peace and security issues, public-interest activism or advocacy. Several awards are made annually. °For a semester or academic year of study abroad worldwide, for undergraduates with significant financial need. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply. Awards are for up to $5000, with the amount varying depending on the length of study and student need. Gilman Scholars studying certain languages may also apply for an additional Critical Need Language Supplement of up to $3000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, Pell Grant recipients, must be applying to or accepted by a study abroad program of at least 4 weeks in length for which the U will award academic credit. °For one-year internships in Asia. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, not more than 29 years old, and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Not intended for students whose academic concentration is in any aspect of Asian studies, or who have previous experience living in Asia. Selection criteria include a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. Luce Scholars receive a generous living stipend and internship placement. 18 awards nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the U of M-Twin Cities. New national fellowship program to encourage exceptional candidates to seek long-term careers as high school math and science teachers in high-need Indiana schools. Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend to complete a year-long master's program at one of four selected Indiana universities; Ball State, Indiana University, Purdue, or the University of Indianapolis. Applicants must be college SENIORS or GRADUATES of any accredited US university with GPA of 3.0 or higher and major or a strong professional background in math, science, technology, or engineering. °For one or more years of study at Cambridge University toward a graduate or second undergraduate degree. SENIORS and GRADUATES who are citizens of any country except the U.K. may apply. Must have exceptional academic achievement; must hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award period. Scholarship includes tuition and fees, generous living allowance, some travel. U.S. government-sponsored scholarships support intensive summer language study in the critical need languages; Azerbaijani, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu, at approved language institutes abroad. Applicants must be U.S. citizens; may be FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS. (Persian institute is available to graduating seniors and graduate students only.) All fields of study are eligible. Some institutes have language prerequisites, but many are open to beginners. All program costs are covered, including travel, room and board, instruction, visa fees, and entrance fees for program activities. °Administered by the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, this scholarship provides up to $10,000 for up to a year of study or research in Sweden. FRESHMAN through SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS who are U.S. citizens or residents may apply. Must have a working knowledge of Swedish language. The scholarship will not be awarded for language study alone, although language study may be part of the proposal. °Provides training, mentoring, and financial support to encourage students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue graduate study and careers serving the public good. Applicants must be JUNIORS, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with a demonstrated interest in public service, and able to contribute to diversity of perspectives. Consideration is given to financial need. Fellows participate in a seven-week Junior Summer Institute (tuition, books, housing, meals, and a $1000 minimum stipend are included) and receive a minimum $5000 scholarship for graduate study in public policy or international affairs at a PPIA-affliliated institution. The U's Humphrey Institute and most other top public affairs schools in the U.S. are PPIA affiliates. Most PPIA Fellows receive additional financial assistance for graduate study. °Offers two-month-long internship opportunities in the German parliament. Applicants should be advanced undergraduates (JUNIOR or SENIOR) or GRADUATE STUDENTS in fields such as political science, international relations, law, history, economics, or German. Applicants must have strong German language skills; some knowledge of the German legislative process; outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must be U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions. °Provides up to two years of support for graduate or professional school in the United States in any field. Applicant must be either a permanent resident, a naturalized U.S. citizen, or the child of two parents who are naturalized citizens; under 31 years old at the time of application; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award. Selection criteria include strong academics and character traits such as creativity, originality, initiative, a capacity for accomplishment, and a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. °Fellowships of up to $23,000 support up to a year, and grants of approximately $5,000 support one to three months, of research, study, or creative work in one or more Scandinavian countries. SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply; must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Some projects may require proficiency in the language of the host country; for other projects, proficiency may not be necessary but some ability in the language is desirable. Graduate students planning dissertation research are given priority for the fellowships, whereas the grants are considered especially suitable to graduating seniors and college graduates. Positive factors for selection include membership in one of several underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; superior academic achievement; and commitment to diversity. °Awarded to undergraduates for graduate study leading to a career in government or elsewhere in public service. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals; currently enrolled JUNIORS in the upper quarter of their class; should have a strong record of service or activism and leadership, as well as excellent communication skills. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school and participate in a Truman Scholars Leadership Week in the summer after the Junior year. An optional Summer Institute in Washington D.C. is offered in the summer after graduation. The scholarship carries a service obligation. 60-65 scholarships are awarded nationwide. °Supports one year of service at the Endowment in Washington D.C. Junior Fellows provide research assistance to senior associates on international policy issues, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony, and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials. Applicants must be SENIORS or have GRADUATED within the past year; must not have begun graduate study. Must have strong academic records with substantial coursework in such areas as international affairs, political science, economics, or history. Provides outstanding students in specific engineering, science, and technology fields at eighteen select institutions, including the University of Minnesota, with a generous scholarship and the opportunity to intern at a Honeywell facility. Applicants must be current JUNIORS or GRADUATE STUDENTS who will complete their studies during the 2010-11 academic year; eligible to work in the U.S., China, India, the Czech Republic, or Mexico. The Department of Energy Office of Science has announced a new scholarship program, funded in part by the Recovery Act of 2009. The Office of Science Graduate Fellowships will support outstanding students to pursue graduate study in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics , engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science. Provides partial tuition support, an annual living stipend, and a research stipend for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for up to three years. Eligibility requirements include: U.S. citizen; senior majoring in one of the eligible fields, or first-year or second-year graduate student; full-time student at the time of application; complete Bachelor's degree by July 31, 2010; GPA of 3.3 or higher; intention to pursue a research-oriented graduate program in an eligible field. 80 fellowships nationwide. °The world's largest privately funded scholarship program for international education: hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year for students from nearly 100 host countries, including the U.S., to study abroad in other host countries. The purpose of the program is to further international understanding and friendly relations. At this time Ambassadorial Scholarships are offered only for one academic year abroad, in the amount of $25,000. Some destinations have language proficiency requirements. Selection criteria include grades, academic rigor, leadership, activities, and the student's essay describing his or her most outstanding intellectual endeavor. Winners are featured in USA Today in March and recieve an award of $2500. 20 winners nationwide. Year-long work-study program beginning in July provides opportunities for young adults to gain cultural understanding, education, and professional experience in Germany. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, age 18-24 at the start of the program; high school, college (FRESHMAN through SENIOR), or GRADUATE STUDENT. Must have coursework and some practical experience relevant to the intended internship field. Exchange Program includes classroom instruction and an internship experience. Covers international and in-country travel, university tuition, a living stipend, and accommodations with a host family or in a student residence. Preferred fields include business, technology, engineering, and agriculture. All fields may apply. German language proficiency is strongly recommended but not required. 75 awards nationwide. °For advanced study in the U.S. or abroad, in such fields as fine arts, architecture, and urban or regional planning. May be used for study at an approved institution, with a private teacher, or for independent study. Applicants must be college GRADUATES or GRADUATE STUDENTS who hold a bachelor's degree at the time of application in Architecture, Art, Dance, Landscape Architecture, Music, Theatre, or Urban and Regional Planning. Criteria include high achievement in the applicant's field, seriousness of purpose, high moral character, and the strength of the proposal. Three major Fellowships will be awarded ranging from $9000-$20,000 depending on the subject pursued. Up to three additional fellowships of lesser amounts may be awarded. Preference will be given to applicants who are under twenty-five years of age. Application includes writing samples and/or portfolio. °The Fellowship program seeks to promote diversity in the U.S. diplomatic corps. Supports two years of graduate study in an approved graduate program as preparation for a career in the Foreign Service. °Supports one year of work as a policy analyst in the Washington D.C. office of Families U.S.A., a national organization for health care consumers, beginning in August. The fellowship aims to develop a network of young leaders who share a passion for social and health care justice. The Villers Fellow works to improve health care coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income or other vulnerable communities; conducts research on health care policy issues; and contributes to publications that are relevant to current health policy debates. Preference is for an indivdual who has completed a college degree in any field by the beginning of the award year (i.e. SENIORS, GRADUATES, GRADUATE STUDENTS). °The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) has announced a new fellowship for undergraduate honors students, the John and Edythe Portz Interdisciplinary Research Fellowship.
