Supports students with demonstrated financial need who have shown exceptional civic leadership potential through public and community service and scholastic achievement. Extremely competitive; one $5000 award nationwide to a student at a four-year institution. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS may apply. Citizenship is open. °Recognizes high school seniors and college students for outstanding achievements, leadership, and commitment to community service. Applicants may be high school seniors or college students currently in their FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, or JUNIOR year. Must be a U.S. citizen attending a U.S. accredited educational institution. Selection criteria include demonstrated character, outstanding achievements, exceptional leadership ability, a serious commitment to community service, academics, and potential to improve the quality of human life. Some priority is given to candidates whose parents are employed in education, government, or other areas of public service. 12-24 scholarships will be awarded for $1500 per year (renewable for up to four years) and are usable for tuition, room and board, books or other academic expenses. Recognizes academic excellence, leadership experience, and involvement in campus and community affairs of female college JUNIORS. Applicants must be full-time Juniors with outstanding academic records; citizenship is open. Winners receive a $3000 prize, a trip to New York, a meeting with top female professionals, and recognition in the magazine. Campus contact: Sally Lieberman, liebe001@umn.edu. °Provides a stipend of $10,000 for a graduating SENIOR to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. Citizenship is open. One to two awards nationwide. °Recognizes full-time JUNIORS and SENIORS who not only excel academically but extend their reach beyond the classroom to benefit society. Selection criteria include grades, academic rigor, leadership, activities, and the student's essay describing his or her most outstanding intellectual endeavor. Winners are featured in USA Today in March and recieve an award of $2500. 20 winners nationwide. Students begin the application process via the online nomination form, and ask a faculty member or advisor to nominate them. Campus contact: Sally Lieberman, liebe001@umn.edu. Annual essay contest challenges college students to analyze urgent ethical issues confronting them in today's complex world. Contestants must be full-time JUNIORS or SENIORS at U.S. institutions. Citizenship is open. First prize $5000; second and third prize, and two honorable mentions, also awarded. Campus contact: Sally Lieberman, liebe001@umn.edu.
