Astronaut Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.03 (Expected, for 2009-10 scholarships)For SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS in engineering or the natural or applied sciences. No special consideration is given to students in astronautical engineering. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with excellent academic records and research experience who have shown initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field. The scholarship is for $10,000 with the possibility of renewal beyond the first year. Applicants must be nominated by a faculty member. Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.23 (U of M deadline)For graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Applicants must be JUNIORS who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise; U.S. citizens or nationals; and must have received need-based financial aid. Amount of award is approximately $34,000. 22 awards nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the U of M-Twin Cities. The U may endorse one candidate. °Boren National Security Education Program Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.21 ( U of M deadline for 2009-10 scholarships)Supports a term or year of study abroad, for the purpose of equipping Americans with an understanding of less commonly studied languages and cultures in regions critical to U.S. interests. NSEP emphasizes the importance of language study as a major component of the study abroad program. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country must be an integral part of the proposal. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records, language and international interests. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply for the undergraduate scholarships. (Boren Fellowships are also offered for GRADUATE STUDENTS, who should visit the Office of International Programs website for further information.) Carries a one-year service requirement. Approximately 150 are awarded nationwide. An institutional review and interview process is conducted on campus for undergraduate applicants. °Campus Compact Frank Newman Leadership Awards
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01 (Expected U of M deadline for 2009 awards)Supports students with demonstrated financial need who have shown exceptional civic leadership potential through public and community service and scholastic achievement. Extremely competitive; one $5000 award nationwide to a student at a four-year institution. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS may apply. Citizenship is open. °Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.05.12 (for 2009 awards)Honors high school seniors and college students for outstanding achievements, leadership, and commitment to community service. Applicants may be high school seniors or college students currently in their FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, or JUNIOR year. Must be a U.S. citizen attending a U.S. accredited educational institution. Selection criteria include demonstrated character, outstanding achievements, exceptional leadership ability, a serious commitment to community service, academics, and potential to improve the quality of human life. Some priority is given to candidates whose parents are employed in education, government, or other areas of public service. 12-24 scholarships will be awarded for $1500 per year and are usable for tuition, room and board, books or other academic expenses. Churchill Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04.03 (U of M deadline for 2010-11 scholarships)For one year of graduate study in engineering, math, or science at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, must be age 19-26 and hold a bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award; must have outstanding academic record (GPA of 3.7 or higher) and research experience. 13-15 scholarships are awarded nationwide to candidates from select institutions, including the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Award includes generous living allowance, tuition and fees, travel grant; approximate value $44,000. Institutional endorsement is required; the U of M-Twin Cities may endorse up to two candidates. Applicants wishing to begin graduate study in the fall immediately following graduation should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their JUNIOR year; applicants who intend to take a year off before beginning graduate study should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their SENIOR year. °Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12.01 (for 2009-10 awards)Freshman Undergraduate Graduate Sophomore Internship Junior Senior Abroad Experience After GraduationYear-long program beginning in July provides opportunities for young adults to gain cultural understanding, education, and professional experience in Germany. Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident, age 18-24 at the start of the program; high school, college (FRESHMAN through SENIOR), or GRADUATE STUDENT. Includes classroom instruction and an internship experience. Award covers international and in-country travel, seminars, and accommodations with a host family. Preferred fields include business, technology, engineering, and agriculture. All fields may apply. German language proficiency is strongly recommended but not required. 75 awards nationwide. °Critical Language Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.11.14 (for summer 2009 scholarships)U.S. government-sponsored scholarships support intensive summer language study in the critical need languages; Azerbaijani, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu, at approved language institutes abroad. Applicants must be U.S. citizens; may be FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS. (Persian institute is available to graduating seniors and graduate students only.) All fields of study are eligible. Some institutes have language prerequisites, but many are open to beginners. °DAAD Bundestag Internships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.01 (for 2009-10 internships)Offers two-month-long internship opportunities in the German parliament. Applicants should be advanced undergraduates (JUNIOR or SENIOR) or GRADUATE STUDENTS in fields such as political science, international relations, law, history, economics, or German. Applicants must have strong German language skills; some knowledge of the German legislative process; outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must be U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions. °DAAD InternXchange Internships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31 (for summer 2009)New! Supports a 12-week summer internship program in Berlin for Journalism students. Includes six weeks of study at the Freie Universitat Berlin, followed by an intensive 5-week internship with a German media organization and a one-week educational tour. Intended primarily for undergraduates (FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, SENIOR) but recent GRADUATES and GRADUATE STUDENTS may also apply. Must be majoring in Journalism of a related field; must have "advanced intermediate" proficiency in German; must have some prior experience in practical journalism. Up to 20 awards. Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02.15 (for 2009-10 scholarships)Supports one semester of study abroad at one of Germany's applied sciences universities, followed by a one-semester professional internship. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS in engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, or social work; U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions. Must have a well-defined study proposal and an interest in contemporary German and European affairs. Must be age 32 or younger at the start of the grant period. °DAAD Summer Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31 (for summer 2009)Supports 6-12-week summer internships working on scientific research projects at top research institutions in Germany. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS studying biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, or engineering. German language skills are helpful but not required; most projects may be carried out in English. Monthly stipend of EUR 650, health insurance, assistance arranging housing. Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31 (for 2009-10 scholarships)For 4-10 months of undergraduate study, senior thesis research, and/or internship in Germany. Applicants must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS in any field of study; must have outstanding academic record and personal integrity; must be U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or foreign national meeting certain conditions; must possess outstanding academic records and personal integrity; demonstrate an interest in contemporary German and European affairs; have well-defined plans for their time in Germany. Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31 (for 2009-10 fellowships)Supports one year of undergraduate study or graduate study in the United States in any field, with special consideration to candidates in the Humanities. Applicants may be outstanding JUNIORS or PH.D. CANDIDATES who are U.S citizens or foreign students already enrolled in U.S. institutions. °Emigre Memorial German Internship Program (EMGIP)
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.15 (for summer 2009); 2009.05.09 (for fall 2009)Supports one- to three-month internships in the German State Parliaments, in fall, spring, or early summer. Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens age 30 or younger, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS, with at least two years of study in international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, or European studies. Must have high-intermediate German language skills and some relevant work experience. U.S. participants receive a stipend of up to 500 Euro per month. °Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA)
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.10.15 (for study abroad programs beginning between December 2008 and April 2009)For undergraduate study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Awards are for up to $3000 for a summer, $5000 for a semester, or $7000 for an academic year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, FRESHMAN through SENIOR with at least one term remaining at the U upon completion of the study abroad; have financial need; be applying to or accepted by a study abroad program through the U or another U.S. accredited university in an eligible country; have little or no prior experience in the proposed country. °Gilman International Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.10.7 (For Spring 2009 programs)For a semester or academic year of study abroad worldwide, for undergraduates with significant financial need. FRESHMAN through SENIORS may apply. Awards are for up to $5000, with the amount varying depending on the length of study and student need. Gilman Scholars studying certain languages may also apply for an additional Critical Need Language Supplement of up to $3000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, Pell Grant recipients, must be applying to or accepted by a study abroad program of at least 4 weeks in length for which the U will award academic credit. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or resident aliens and must be SOPHOMORES or JUNIORS in the upper quarter of their class. Selection criteria include outstanding academic performance and demonstrated potential for and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Undergraduate research experience is highly valued. Pays up to $7,500 per year for up to two years. Approximately 300 scholarships are awarded nationwide. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be of Hispanic heritage as defined by the Scholarship Fund, U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident, with GPA of 3.0 or higher. °Honeywell Innovators Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12.1 (for 2009-10 scholarships)Provides outstanding students in engineering, science, or technology at eighteen select institutions, including the University of Minnesota, with a scholarship of $10,000 and the opportunity to intern at a Honeywell facility. Applicants must be current JUNIORS or GRADUATE STUDENTS who will graduate between December 2009 and September 2010; in the top 25% of their class; eligible to work in the U.S., China, India, the Czech Republic, or Mexico. Killam Fellowships to Canada
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.31For a semester or year of undergraduate study in Canada. The program encourages exchange between Canada and the U.S. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, full-time undergraduates (in most cases SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR) with outstanding academic records. Fellowships are $10,000 for a year or $5000 for a semester. Fellows also participate in two exchange events, for which expenses are covered. Approximately 10 fellowships nationwide. °Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.15 (for 2009-10 scholarships)Administered by the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, this scholarship provides up to $10,000 for up to a year of study or research in Sweden. FRESHMAN through SENIORS and GRADUATE STUDENTS who are U.S. citizens or residents may apply. Must have a working knowledge of Swedish language. The scholarship will not be awarded for language study alone, although language study may be part of the proposal. °Marshall Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04.03 (U of M deadline for scholarship support beginning Fall 2010)For two years of study at any British university, leading to a graduate degree or two one-year graduate degrees in any field. Extension for a third year is possible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Selection criteria include outstanding academics (minimum 3.7 GPA), distinction of intellect and character, seriousness of purpose, and potential to make a significant contribution to society. Must have an undergraduate degree in hand by the beginning of the award period. Applicants may not be more than two years beyond graduation, and may have begun graduate study. Scholarship includes tuition and fees plus allowances for living, books, and travel to and from the UK (approximate value: 20,000 GBP per year). Approximately 40 scholarships nationwide. Mitchell Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04.03 (U of M deadline for 2010-11 scholarships)For one year of study in Ireland or Northern Ireland, usually to complete a one-year graduate degree in any field. Must be U.S. citizen, age 18-29 on October 1 in the year of application; must hold a bachelors degree by the beginning of the award and may have begun graduate study. Selection criteria include superior record of academic excellence, leadership, and public service. Approximately 12 awards nationwide. Institutional endorsement is required for currently enrolled students. applicants wishing to study in Ireland during the year immediately following graduation should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their JUNIOR year; applicants who intend to take a year off before studying in Ireland should submit a preliminary application in the spring of their SENIOR year. National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.02.28 (for scholarships beginning Fall 2009)Supports outstanding undergraduates from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research, for one to four years. Applicants may be full-time FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, or JUNIORS. Must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and be certified by the Office of Student Finance as having “exceptional financial need. In general, applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, but foreign nationals may apply under certain conditions. Carries a service requirement. Approximately 15 scholarships of up to $20,000 are awarded per year; scholarship may be renewed for up to four years. Also includes paid research training at NIH during the summer. °Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship Program (PPIA)
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.01Provides training, mentoring, and financial support to encourage students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue graduate study and careers serving the public good. Applicants must be JUNIORS, U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with a demonstrated interest in public service, and able to contribute to diversity of perspectives. Consideration is given to financial need. Fellows participate in a seven-week Junior Summer Institute (tuition, books, housing, meals, and a $1000 minimum stipend are included) and receive a minimum $5000 scholarship for graduate study in public policy or international affairs at a PPIA-affliliated institution. The U's Humphrey Institute and most other top public affairs schools in the U.S. are PPIA affiliates. Most PPIA Fellows receive additional financial assistance for graduate study. °Rhodes Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.04.03 (U of M deadline for scholarship support beginning Fall 2010)For one to three years of study at Oxford University, leading to a graduate or, in certain cases, a second undergraduate degree in any field. American Rhodes applicants must be U.S. citizens, age 18-23 on October 1 in the year of application; must hold bachelor's degree by the beginning of the award; may have begun graduate work. (For a list of other Rhodes-eligible countries of citizenship, see the “non-U.S. citizens” page at www.rhodesscholar.org/.) Selection criteria include proven intellectual and academic achievement; integrity of character; interest in and respect for one’s fellow human beings; the ability to lead; and the energy to use one’s talents to the full. Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12 (Application deadlines are set by the clubs; expect deadlines as early as DECEMBER 2008 for scholarships for 2010-11.)The world's largest privately funded scholarship program for international education: hundreds of scholarships are awarded each year for students from nearly 100 host countries, including the U.S., to study abroad in other host countries. The purpose of the program is to further international understanding and friendly relations. Several types of scholarships are offered, including academic year scholarships, multi-year scholarships, and scholarships for 3-6 months of intensive language study and cultural immersion. Awards range from $12,500 to $25,000, depending on the type and length of the program. Some of the scholarships have language proficiency requirements. SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, AND GRADUATES may apply. Must be citizen of a country with Rotary Clubs. °Teaching Assistant Program in France
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.15 (for 2009-2010 assistantships)Supports a 6-9-month teaching assistantship in France at a primary or secondary school or teacher's college. Applicants must be JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATES, age 20-34. U.S. citizens and some U.S. permanent residents are eligible. Must be proficient in French. Stipend is EUR 945 per month. Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.03.31Supports up to 3 months of research at a Swiss university. Applicants must be currently enrolled SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, SENIORS, or GRADUATE STUDENTS and must provide written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss university that she/he will accept you for a research stay in his/her group. Knowledge of German, French, or Italian is helpful but not required. Approximately $800 per month scholarship is paid upon completion of the research stay. °Truman Scholarships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.11.07 (U of M deadline for 2009 scholarships)Awarded to undergraduates for graduate study leading to a career in government or elsewhere in public service. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals; currently enrolled JUNIORS in the upper quarter of their class; should have a strong record of service or activism and leadership, as well as excellent communication skills. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school and participate in a Truman Scholars Leadership Week in the summer after the Junior year. An optional Summer Institute in Washington D.C. is offered in the summer after graduation. The scholarship carries a service obligation. 70-75 scholarships are awarded nationwide. USA TODAY's All-USA College Academic Awards
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2008.12.12Recognizes full-time JUNIORS and SENIORS who not only excel academically but extend their reach beyond the classroom to benefit society. Selection criteria include grades, academic rigor, leadership, activities, and the student's essay describing his or her most outstanding intellectual endeavor. Winners are featured in USA Today in March and recieve an award of $2500. 20 winners nationwide. °Udall Native American Congressional Internships
Deadline (YR.MM.DD): 2009.01.30 (for summer 2009 internships)Supports a ten-week summer internship in a congressional office or federal agency in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students with a demonstrated interest in areas related to tribal public policy, including tribal governance, law, health, education, justice, natural resource protection, or economic development. JUNIORS, SENIORS, GRADUATES, and GRADUATE STUDENTS may apply. Applicants must meet the Udall Foundation’s definition of Native American or Alaska Native, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Program includes community-style living accommodations, round-trip airfare to D.C., a daily allowance for meals and other expenses, and a $1,200 education stipend. 12 awarded nationwide.
