I couldn't believe that Superior National Forest contains over 2,000 lakes.
It is amazing to see how many different kinds of animals live inside the forest area.

I didn't know that motors, or that logging was allowed at all in Superior National Forrest. The article made it seem like people were still living subsistance lives in the forest, is this true?
The first article was quick to point out all the damage that people had done to the wilderness of the forest, while the second article was more positive. Besides the profits Ely would get from passers-by, i don't understand the point of writers giving so much hype and exaggerating "pristine" qualities of the BWCAW.

It is interesting to see how people will exaggerate to make something seem more than it is and will promote without listing possible dangers. In Canoe Country a lot of this kind of advertisement was a large plus for Ely and the other northern towns.
Reading the second article has shown me that many people still enjoy the old activities that were necessary in the old days. I am also impressed at how much people have tried to improve the forest for the wildlife and to create different habitates within eachother.

It was interesting in the article when they depicted the canoe area as such a remote place where you are in a world like no other.
Even though I have never been to this part of Minnesota, I think it sounds like a great place to get out of everyday things we experience in our lives and enjoy the wilderness.

It’s amazing how people spoke of the Quetico Superior. “A northern wilderness, untouched by civilization.” I’ve been to Ely twice and both times I have gotten the feeling of leaving civilization and entering into a wilderness. Obviously, there have been many changes over the past 85 years, but I still think Ely and the Quetico Superior hold the same appeal.
I never knew that the Superior National Forest had all three biomes, I only thought it contained the coniferous forest. When the types of animals and their populations were listed, I couldn’t help wonder what percent of Minnesota's wildlife population is located in the Superior National Forest, such as bears, moose, and wolves. I was especially interested in the wolves. How many wolves are now in Minnesota and are they still on the endangered species list?
Posted by: Jamie Seitzer | April 25, 2006 11:31 PM
Actually Minnesota is the only one of the lower 48 states where the timberwolf is well enough established to be considered only threataned rather than endangered. A big part of that is the fact that there are large populations of wolves in bothe the BWCA and superior national forest.

I have been to the BWCA multiple times andfor the most part it is pretty remote and peaceful. However when you get onto some of the border lakes it is possible to encounter some motor boats since the Canadians don't restrict them. So if any one is planning on going there I would recommend trying to stay away from those lakes as much as possible.

I don't know why, but for some reason I found it surprising how many pieces of literature "Canoe Country" found that described the northern part of the state as a fishing paradise, a sanctuary, and a sacred place. I would expect, at the times they were written (1919-1920's), that the focus would have been on the resources on that land rather than the pristine beauty of it. I am honestly surprised that they didn't publicize the resources.
Two things stuck out to me in the second reading. The first was how long Indians have lived in Northern Minnesota. The excerpt listed the Blackduck Indians that were predicted to have lived there in 500 A.D. First of all, is that where the town Blackduck got its name? and were there any around at Jesus' time (0, i guess it would be called). The second thing that caught my attention was FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps. Why have I never heard of this? Congrats FDR. I was really impressed by this.

It is really hard to imagine what the wilderness was like before all the damage.
In respose to Jamie, I have been to both Quetico and BWCAW, and it is different. You see fewer people. It really is more of a wilderness.

One thing good about this article is that it really makes the reader want to visit the places described and mentioned. I like it when literature can do that.
Another thing I found interesting was comparing what I knew and had experienced about Ely and Northern Minnesota with the information in the reading. It's always cool to learn things you didn't know about familier places.
Posted by: Katrina Hopkins | April 26, 2006 08:34 AM
The saddest part of logging is that most people only see the visual harm that it does to the forest and this article does a good job of explaining that to readers.
I believe one of the greatest descriptions of the Ely area is when the author writes about an Ely tourist guide, "Here the Philosopher can find his mystery, the Young Man his vision, and the Old Man his dream. Here, the soul of silent spaces still hallows the legends of a past people whose camp fires glowed along the shore."
Posted by: Vanessa Magnus | April 26, 2006 09:02 AM
One of the things that i noticed right away was that it said that the area wasn't even suited for boats and large craft, and i would assume that it was more appealing to canoers for this reason.
Posted by: Marc Huneke | April 26, 2006 10:20 AM
I guess I didn't really realize that the Boundary Waters have been in existence so long. I thought it was funny that after explaining the actual scenery and how rundown some of it looked after the loggers left, they tried to sell it as a "pristine wilderness."
I have a question on wild rice. Does it only grow in northern Minnesota like climates or can it be grown elsewhere?
Posted by: Katie Hausladen | April 26, 2006 10:45 AM
I haven't been to Ely, but I understand the outdoors feel when I'm in northern Minnesota. I feel like it is uncivilized in a remote sense. It's far from people and so different from life in the Cities.
Like Jamie said, I never knew that the Superior National Forest had all three biomes. I too picture only the coniferous forests in that area. Though all three biomes are present, is there one more dominant then the other?
