1.The Bible clearly states that man is given dominion over the land and animals. Is there a difference between dominion and stewardship, or does dominion imply that we are in charge and can do what we want?
2.What could embryonic stem cell research do for our country? (pros and cons)
3.Is intelligent design a sneaky way of teaching creationism in schools, and if so, why do some religioius leaders oppose it?
1. Are science and religion inherently incompatible? How does firm belief in one negate an equally firm belief in the other? (i.e. creation/evolution, importance of man, proof vs. faith)
2. What dangers would be present if the strict separation of church and state were loosened? How does this strengthen or detract from each platform? (i.e. ID/creation as science, prayer in school, religious grounds for stem cell research)
3. Why is science empirically valued over religion? For example, what benefit does religion have for trying to prove its ideas “scientifically”?
1) Why are science and religion continually in opposition - why can't we even decide a common ground for the teaching of evolution in our school systems?
2) Who is allowed to regulate to the concept of natural selecion? (Is genetically modifying embryos stepping too far?)
3) What is God's role in the universe? (Are our lives guided by him, or are we all alone?)
Posted by: Jacquelyn at December 5, 2006 05:33 PM1.) Is it immoral for scientists to create nuclear weapons? Why don’t we try to get rid of our own nuclear weapons, if we are trying to get rid of other countries’ weapons? No one ever wants to die, so why then, as people do we create such massive weapons?
2.) What are the similar and different aspects of the relationship between science and religion?
3.) Did God create Science?
4.) Should evolution and creation science be taught in schools? Why or why not?
Posted by: Jenny Salzer at December 6, 2006 10:40 AMIs it possible to reconcile a literal interpretation of the Bible and modern evolutionary theory? Should such an attempt be made?
On the whole, has nuclear research and the development of nuclear weapons been positive for society?
What exactly is sustainability and how would one live a sustainable lifestyle?
Posted by: Josh at December 6, 2006 12:54 PM1) Why the environment has been getting destroyed for thousands of years?
2) God and the differences between different religions?
3) Why are people so set on what they want there children to look like and what sex they are?
Posted by: Angela Walker at December 6, 2006 03:26 PMHere are my questions:
1. Why is religious belief or disbelief polarized? And why is agnosticism
seen as a mediocre alternative which at best fails to take a stance?
2. Should Creationism or Intelligent Design be taught in school? In what
form or classes should they be taught?
3. Why do many conservative religious stances seek to discredit or ignore
scientific evidence, and yet paradoxically seek to use science as a
legitimizing factor in their own beliefs?
Is science immoral if used to extend one’s life expectancy? I would talk about how altering one’s body is unnatural and possibly against God’s plan or destiny for the individual.
After our section on spirituality and warfare I began thinking about possible counter measures to combat large-scale violence in general. A possible way to do this would be to form a Superhero Peace Team. The team would consist of real people who are living currently to go around the world and attempt to help cultivate peace in troubled areas. The paper would be about the members and their teams goal and methods. The Dali Lama, Thich Naut Hahn, Desmond Tutu, and Noam Chomsky will be some of the members. So, can The Peace Superheroes save the planet from violence?
Is Agnosticism a legitimate mindset toward spiritually? Why? …..
1. Does prayer really have the power to heal? If so, what does it say about a God who would respond to these prayers for some but not for others? What does it say about a God who would ‘abandon’ the un-prayed for? If prayers don’t have any power to heal, what does this say about the nature of God, or the existence of God? What loving creator wouldn’t respond to the calls of his people?
2. There seems to be two forms of ‘knowledge’ or ways of understanding the world -- one is emotional knowledge (spirituality, custom, dogma) and the other is intellectual knowledge (research, scientific evidence). How do these contrasting modes of defining personal and universal truths reflect the arguments between religion and science, and which way of “knowing our world” is more valuable and satisfying? What are the religious and intellectual characteristics of both an emotional knower and an intellectual knower? Are intellectual knowledge (science, rational thought process) and emotional knowledge (religious, political beliefs often based on tradition, personal bias) really all that different?
3. There seems to exist a contradictory relationship between the notion of ‘free will’ for every person and the notion that a timeless God has full knowledge of the past, present, and future. If God knows what everyone will be doing before we do, how can we have free will to choose? Would free will require that God be ‘in the dark’ on all our future actions until we ourselves make our choices? How can one be held accountable for something God knew they would do before they were even born?
1) Does science overreach in matters dealing with ethics?
2) In which way if any should religion be taught in schools?
3) Why does religion try to undermine science? Then if they try to undermine it why does religion want to be thought of as a science?
-should stem cell research play more of a role in treating those with related health issues?
-should things such as prayer and the "healing power of God" be studied under the eye of science?
-does creationism deserve to be taught in public schools? is it potentially as educational as teaching evolution? how does one begin to determine the validity of creationism, and teaching to children?
Posted by: kyle at December 6, 2006 08:07 PM1. Will the differences within scientific theory and religious doctrine ever be reconciled?
2. If Intelligent Design is to be taught in public schools, should Evolution be taught in Sunday school?
3. Can issues of faith ever be reliably tested by the scientific method?
Posted by: Evan at December 7, 2006 12:46 AM1. Is karama the law that governs the universe? How else can we explain the circumstances we are placed in if it wasn't for karama? Is it true that what goes around really comes around?
2. What is the image of God? Should God not be thought of because we cannot imagine Him in all His glory? Is ignorance of God and disbelief of His existence a moral crime?
3. Are we closer to God now then we will ever be? Who is to say there is an afterlife? Is God already here and waiting for people to percieve Him? How can we be with God when we are just mortals?
Posted by: Kshaman Reddy at December 7, 2006 01:42 AM1. Should science be limited by ethical standards?
2. Does stem cell research violate life and historical traditions of faith?
3. Is there a struggle between free will and destiny. If so, which approach is more useful and which is more applicable to our everyday life.
