Picking Your Ideal Obgyn
Although not as important as the relationship with the Obgyn, you should also feel comfortable with the office staff and nurses. You should have a pleasant experience from the beginning and should observe friendly, professional staff. If no one in the office is happy or friendly, you will have a hard time relaxing and feeling comfortable.
You should also consider other factors that will contribute to your comfort level such as the cleanliness of the rooms and the overall atmosphere. Most people prefer to see clean rooms although not everyone feels at home in a sterile hospital like setting. You should make sure that the Obgyn you choose practices in an office that is within your comfort level whether that is a homey setting or a more hospitalized setting.
You should also consider how many doctors are in the practice. Some Obgyn practices have a couple of doctors on staff and others have five or even more. You will have to rotate through all of them so you can get to know them all, especially if you are pregnant. You will probably not be able to pick a specific doctor to deliver your baby in a large practice and will have to go to whoever is on call when you go into labor. This is why it is important to be comfortable with everyone in the practice, because if there are only one or two doctors you like you are not guaranteed to have them for delivery.
You should always prepare a list of the questions and concerns that are the most important to you when looking for an Obgyn. Your list of questions should include the things that are the most important to you regarding your care during your pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. Be sure to see if the Obgyn you are interviewing agrees with or will honor your preferences for care and birth whether they are for religious or personal reasons. Do not be afraid to ask questions to get things done in such a way that you are comfortable with. Never assume that an Obgyn will just do it your way unless you ask and get a feel for their opinion as well. You may want to know about their c-section rate, their episiotomy rate, if they allow family in the delivery room, and how they feel about scheduled c-sections and natural births.
Always be sure that the Obgyn or Obgyn practice you choose gives you the support you need and will honor your preferences within medical reason. If the doctor you interview will not respect your decisions find another one. You should also find another doctor if the one you interview is not willing to answer your questions or get s annoyed if you ask too many.
