Adium update causes instability with jabber servers including UM Chat

Update:Version 1.2.7 was released over the weekend and fixes the underlying cause of this issue.

There is an issue with the 1.2.6 version of the Adium messaging client for OS X and jabber servers such as the one powering UM Chat. The best current solution is to disable your UM Chat account in Adium and recreate it. Others have reported that going back to version 1.2.5 works. <strike>I am looking for a public mirror that still has Adium 1.2.5 available for download.</strike> Download Adium 1.2.5(via adiumx.cacheflyu.net).

dockutil 1.0

dockutil is one for the sys admins out there. I'll be the first to admit I haven't had a chance to test yet. Seems like it could be handy for helping to deploy new apps.

iPhones and UM Cal

People have been asking about iPhone compatibility with UM Cal. At this juncture there is no supported method for syncing Oracle Calendar--the enterprise calnedaring solution that drives UM Cal--with an iPhone.

Later this month Apple is going to release their iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) to third party software developers. Shortly after that there are plans from two software companies--who both currently make SyncML clients that allow Palm and Windows Mobile based phones and PDAs to sync with UM Cal--to make an iPhone SyncML client. Once there is a shipping, Apple-sanctioned SyncML client for the iPhone, the UM Cal team will work with Oracle to come up with an officially supported syncing solution for the iPhone.

Until then, the UM Cal Web Client works fairly well in Mobile Safari, especially in the day/list view. It may not provide alarms, but it will at least allow iPhone users to see their calendars while on the go.

Leopard and Active Directory

Many of Mac users at the U of M are finding themselves now interacting with the University's central Active Directory service. A while back I took a shot at writing a utility using AppleScript Studio that would help smooth the process of configuring Kerberos, getting a ticket and mounting AD shares over smb in the Finder.

Welcome

Welcome to APPLE-B. This is meant to be a companion piece to the ever-popular apple-l mailing list. Multiple authors will be able to submit tips, tricks and even ask the occasional question about Macs and how they're used at the University of Minnesota. Much of the content here will likely be courtesy of other fine publications on the web. Our main goal is to collect useful information for U of M Mac users.
