The Office of Information Technology has implemented a new system for resetting Internet passwords, making it possible for students to reset a forgotten password online — 24 hours a day — without calling the helpline. The option currently is available only to students.
The "self-service" password reset option employs the same idea as "forgot your password?" links available on other Web sites. To enroll, students provide secret answers to a series of questions. If a user needs to reset their password, the online service will require that they answer some of the questions in order to verify their identity.
Once enrolled, students will be able to reset a lost or forgotten password anytime — not just when the helpline is open. And because they provide the secret answers to the questions, it provides their account with the highest level of security.
For added security, students also will be asked for their UCard number or an alternate form of identification, such as a driver's license, if they do not have a UCard.
