On October 7th at 5am, OIT sent out a system-wide message to all voicemail (Gopher Messaging) customers. However, OIT was simultaneously performing other repair activities that impacted the ability of the Phone system to light the message waiting indication lights on people's telephones.
This link failed at 5:30 am and was not recovered until shortly after 8am. During this period Message Waiting Indication lights could not be turn on or off. This was particularly bad timing, since the system was attempting to light thousands of indicators for the broadcast message, as well as normal messaging traffic.
