OIT Launches a New Software Web Site

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) has redesigned its UTools Web site. UTools provides a complete and comprehensive list of all U of M software and applications; not just software options available through OIT.

The UTools Web site provides students, staff, and faculty a single location in which they can browse for software that is available to them. The new design makes it easier for users to find software that is available to them based on their campus affiliation and the license type they desire.

In addition to making it easier for customers to find software, the UTools Web site also enables authorized staff from collegiate/administrative units and departments to submit their own software for inclusion in the catalog, making it available to the wider University community.

Check out the UTools Web site. If you have a question about software information, please send your question to the OIT Software License Team at software@umn.edu.

Windows 7 is Now Available

Faculty, staff, and students at the University of Minnesota can purchase Windows 7, the latest operating system from Microsoft, at academic prices through OIT's UTools Web site. Windows 7 is available to faculty and staff for $95 and to students for just $7.

There is a 32-bit and 64-bit version of windows 7. Depending on their current operating system and computer specifications, customers may experience some difficulties in upgrading to Windows 7. OIT's software licensing team and technical support staff have put together a FAQ sheet that lists things customers should consider before they purchase the new software. The FAQ sheet is available on the UTools Web site.

For questions and comments about upgrading to Windows 7, please software@umn.edu.

Class Capture Online Training

  • setting up for recording

  • making a recording

  • processing and delivering a recording

To access the Camtasia Relay course go to the technology training Web site.

Coffman Tech Stop Reaches a Milestone

On October 19, the OIT Tech Stop located in Coffman Memorial Union was visited by its 10,000th customer.

The Tech Stop in Coffman opened in late January and over the last nine months has been busy providing students, staff, and faculty on the Twin Cities campus with face-to-face technology consultations, support, and training.

Recently, Tech Stop has expanded its reach by opening a new location in Coffey 50 in Saint Paul making it even easier for the University community to find technology support.

For more information about Tech Stop, please visit the Tech Stop Web site.

NEW! Online Chat

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) now has another way for customers to get help. Live online help is now available as an online chat feature. You can find out about all of OIT's technology support options at the Help and Support Web site.

Google Apps implementation update

The Google Apps for the University of Minnesota implementation remains on schedule.

Our next step is to begin a phased roll out to students, and we will begin to send invitations to the freshman class during the Oct. 30 weekend. We expect that all freshmen will have received an invitation by the end of the first week of November. This phased implementation will then move to the sophomore class and continue until all students have been invited by the end of the calendar year.

At the same time, OIT is in the final stages of finishing the due diligence work that will lead to faculty and staff adoption. This work involves the University's internal audit department and the University's internal IT security and assurance department. We expect to be in a position to offer Google Apps to faculty and staff from collegiate and administrative units near the beginning of December, and will continue to work with the IT leadership in these areas on that adoption plan.

For more information, visit the Google project Web site at www.oit.umn.edu/google-initiative, or send e-mail to gpilot@umn.edu.

Google Apps for the U of M town hall forums set

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is working on plans to provide the Google Apps Education Edition for use at the University. A University Google account will offer, in addition to e-mail, access to the University Google Apps suite, and will provide users the opportunity to share documents with others in the University Google space.

Since it was first announced, the Google Apps for the University of Minnesota project has generated a great deal of interest across the University. The project team has received many questions and comments since we began planning and developing the applications, and began informing the campus community about using Google Apps at the University.

The team invites you to attend one of our town hall forums, scheduled for 3-4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in 402 Walter Library, East Bank campus.

Both events will be available via UMConnect at https://umconnect.umn.edu/townhallforum.

For more information, visit www.oit.umn.edu/google-initiative, or contact gpilot@umn.edu.

IT Outage on October 24

At 2 a.m. on Oct. 24, many important University IT systems and applications will be unavailable for use, including PeopleSoft Financials, Student Registration, and approximately 1/3 of University e-mail accounts. OIT is working on a plan to keep some of the University's key applications running during this window--particularly those used by students and faculty. All applications supported by OIT are expected to be restored to service by noon on Sunday, Oct. 25.

You can read more about this outage, including a list of which systems and applications will be available and which will not. This site will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

The Road to TCF Bank Stadium

The Office of Information Technology's Video Solutions has produced a half-hour documentary for the President's Office and University Relations about the U of M's new TCF Bank Stadium.

The program features opening game day footage of the Gophers defeat of Air Force on September 12 as well as interviews with key players in the planning, fundraising, and construction of the stadium. To document the opening day required two production crews shooting interviews, game day festivities in the stadium as well as at McNamara Alumni Center and crowd reaction. A highlight of the program is time-lapse footage of the stadium as spectators fill up the stadium through the end of the victorious game.

The spirit and excitement of the new stadium on campus is reflected in the documentary. It delivers a key message that this is truly Minnesota's Stadium; it's for every person in every county in the state. The documentary describes how others will use the stadium such as Kinesiology classes and the University of Minnesota Marching Band.

The documentary, "The Road to TCF Bank Stadium," is slated to premiere on the Big Ten Network on October 8 in Minnesota's programming block at 10 a.m. It will then re-air later that day at 4 p.m. and again at 4 a.m on the October 9. In addition it will be on the Web and distributed for local and state programming.

The program will be posted online featuring three components: the complete program, the two minute open, and the time-lapse footage of the entire opening day.

Medical Procedures on YouTube

The video-sharing Web site, which started as a place to share funny home videos of your cat chasing string or your toddler dancing, has become so much more. As instructors explore using digital technology to reach students, social media tools like YouTube are at the center of attention.

Anne Minenko, professor of rheumatology, gained interest and expertise in integrating technology in teaching and learning during her time in the Faculty Fellowship Program, which is coordinated by the Office of Information Technology's Digital Media Center. Together, she and Paul Sufka, a rheumatology fellow, researched the use of instructional medical procedural videos online. They looked at videos from the New England Journal of Medicine and videos from YouTube and compared their content, instructional quality, and technical visual and audio quality.

Their abstract, "An Evaluation of Knee Arthrocentesis Videos on YouTube for Content, Technical, and Instructional Quality," has been accepted to the 2009 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Annual Scientific Meeting as a podium presentation.

From their research, Sufka and Minenko learned that knee arthrocentesis videos on the Internet are, at best, of moderate instructional quality with highly variable content. However, they see potential for instructional medical procedural videos online if they are of higher quality. Sufka said, "This work hopefully will encourage people to produce higher quality videos for medical education."

As for next steps, Sufka and Minenko are looking forward to the ACR meeting in October where they are hoping to hear about other innovative ideas for teaching with technology.

Their abstract can be found online at the ACR Web site.
