The University of Minnesota is implementing a Business Intelligence (BI) practice to enhance its current measurement and reporting practices. BI is a broad term for data management, analysis practices, and software tools enabling evidence-based decision making. Evidence-based decision making is not new to the University. What is new with this BI practice is a formalized approach fostered throughout the institution.
Added Value
The implementation of the BI practice will bring improved information about data resources available to the University community. It will add a new, powerful toolset to the University's reporting suite. It will also establish a collaborative organization to support the development and use of analytical resources throughout the University.Infrastructure Development and Implementation Pilots
In recent months, the BI Implementation project has been developing the infrastructure to support BI. This infrastructure includes a Data Governance group set up to improve the usability and value of provided data and an Analytics Collaborative to provide support to University staff practicing BI. Finally, several groups have created pilot content in the new toolset. These pilot efforts will provide the basis of the content available when the toolset is rolled out to the University community.- Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Enterprise Financial Systems (EFS) have piloted financial content
- University Services has piloted building condition analysis, and the
- Office of Planning and Analysis has created a pilot of student survey data in the new toolset.
Timeline
Over the next few weeks, the Office of Planning and Analysis will launch a BI website containing information about who to contact for help, training materials, and general information about BI at the University. On April 2, the BI platform will be made available to the University, albeit with limited content. To receive additional information about the BI implementation timeline, training opportunities, and resources to help you determine where and how it can enhance your analysis and decision making, we invite you to subscribe to the BI Implementation listserv.
