The results of a $32 million study are being questioned by some of the top doctors in their field, the USA Today reported.

Chelation therapy is a process used to remove heavy metals from the blood and is used primarily to treat heavy metal poisoning. The therapy, however, has been used "off-label" for everything from Alzheimer's to autism, the USA Today reported.

The study found that there was a small overall benefit, due mainly to its preventing heart problems in people with diabetes. Mainstream doctors, however, say there is no reason why the treatment should help heart patients, because heavy metal buildup isn't a cause of heart disease, Forbes reported.
