Hello All,
I hope all is well and that your University of Minnesota experience continues to grow. I would love to meet with you before the end of the semester and before you get to crazy with finals.

I meeting would include a short check in, a list of ways to prepare for your second year and a treat to take home.

Self Care: Not Just Another Stress Management Workshop


Join us Friday, April 8 at 2:30 in 169 Appleby Hall. In this 50 minute session you can learn about and experience:
• Aspects of Balance
• Biodots: a tiny feedback device that reflects stress and relaxation levels
• Qigong stuff to generate energy and reduce tension
• A Qigong Exercise to restore balance and enhance well- being

CROSS-CULTURAL LEADERSHIP RETREAT FOR ALL

ISSS is currently looking for international and U.S. undergraduate students to apply for the Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat. I've attached the flyer, so please share this information with your students.

CROSS-CULTURAL LEADERSHIP RETREAT
(Application deadline: Noon on Tuesday, March 1)
WHEN: 5 pm - 9 pm on Friday, March 25 and 9 am - 5 pm on Saturday, March 26
PLACE: 101 University International Center, East Bank

This retreat is for both international and U.S. undergraduate students who want to become more effective in international environments. (The retreat will be offered to undergraduate students during the Fall 2011 semester). This interactive, high-energy event becomes a living laboratory of what it takes to work with people from different cultures. Participants start friendships with people from all over the world and discover their own leadership potential. A cutting edge cross-cultural leadership model, Personal Leadership, will be used to develop participants' cross cultural skill-set that is needed for professional and personal lives in the 21st century. Can you belive that we are already 6 weeks into the semester?

I just wanted to thank those that have already made appointments and have visited me. Touching base at the beginning of the semester can really start things off well.

This is still the beginning of the semester and I would love to set up appointments with the rest of you. Building your College Success is part of MCAE's job.

Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities for Semester, Year, and Summer!


If you currently receive the Pell Grant as part of your financial package, or if you plan on studying abroad in Asia, we invite you to attend one or both of the following sessions about two scholarship opportunities. To verify that you are a Pell Grant recipient, check your eFAAN via OneStop.


The Benjamin Gilman scholarship provides awards of up to $5000 for US undergraduate students receiving Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide ($8000 for students studying critical need languages).
The Freeman-ASIA scholarship awards up to $7000 for US undergraduate students studying in East or Southeast Asia. Pell Grant eligibility not required.

Session 1: Benjamin Gilman and Freeman-ASIA Scholarship Information Session
This session will cover eligibility requirements, application deadlines, process, resources, and tips.

Date: Wednesday, February 9
Time: 2:00-3:00pm
Location: 289 Humphrey Center

Session 2: Benjamin Gilman and Freeman-ASIA Scholarship Application Workshop
This workshop is open to students who have started the application and need additional help with revising the essays. It will *not* include general information on the scholarship.

Date: Tuesday, February 22
Time: 2:00-3:30pm
Location: 110 Heller Hall

-Prior to the workshop, email thuydoan@umn.edu a draft of your personal statement and follow-on project proposal.
-Bring a draft of your essays with you to the workshop. Only students with a completed draft will be admitted.
-Staff from the Center for Writing and Learning Abroad Center and your peers will review your draft and offer suggestions for revisions.

RSVP required for the writing workshop (session 2). Email thuydoan@umn.edu by 4:00pm Friday, February 18 to RSVP.

Fall 2010 Exam Week on the following dates:

Friday 17 December: 12pm - 4pm
Monday 20 December: 12pm - 4pm
Tuesday 21 December: 12pm - 4pm

These hours will be posted on paper in 140 Appleby as well as usual
schedule posting locations throughout the Instructional Center.

Gregory can help students with Math, Physics, Astronomy as well as basic
probability theory and earlier topics in beginning statistics.

"Checklist"
o Find a practice final. You may also wish to use practice midterms for earlier material. Sources:
o Course pages - many instructors provide practice exams and solutions
o MCAE web site > academic support & services > practice final exams and solutions (http://www.mcae.umn.edu/acadsupport/exam.html) - 1000-2000 level math
o If no practice final available, create one!
o Look to previous exams for examples of how to test topics
o Remember that final exam problems sometimes combine related topics
o Take practice final under actual test conditions
o In the week before Exam Jam, schedule a time block as long as the actual final
o Prepare the materials you'll be allowed to have in the final (reference sheets etc)
o Set a timer to signal end of exam period
o Work the entire time as if it were the real exam
o Grade your final and create a list of questions
o Make note of anything you still don't understand or need to practice more
o Set appointment with your instructor to answer questions
o See your teaching assistant (TA)
o Consult with MCAE Instructional Center tutors at Exam Jam
o What to bring to Exam Jam
o Worked practice midterms and/or final, old exams, solutions
o Textbook
o Lecture notes and homework
o If course is on-line, be sure to bring your laptop or print out relevant materials for your questions in advance
o Reinforce what you learned
o Review and practice any points of difficulty as soon as possible after Exam Jam
o Follow up Exam Jam work with additional study and practice
o Take a last practice final under actual test conditions. This reinforces the things you learned, and gives you additional experience with the test situation.

Workshop Event - Learning about Research

As you know we ask that you attend one or more workshops this semester. Here is one for those that have interest in research.

COSP Poster Presentations to MCAE students. This will be an opportunity to not only learn about graduate research, especially for those who are planning to pursue graduate degrees, but to also talk with presenters about their current graduate
experiences and tips for applying to graduate school. It's never to soon to make plans.
