Got Sleep?

Chapter 5 touched on the concepts of circadian rhythm, as well as the various stages of sleep. This made me remember an article I came across thanks to Stumbleupon. Below I have included the link to the specific article. It talks about nontraditional sleep cycles, and the success thereof. One of the cycles listed is called the Biphasic sleep cycle. This is the sleep cycle that most college students use. It consists of a shorter night's sleep, and a midday nap. The sleep cycle that I find most unique is called the Dymaxion sleep cycle. It involves four naps, 30 minutes each, perfectly evenly spaced. A diagram of this is shown below. What is so shocking is that people on this sleep cycle only get two hours of sleep each night. However, according to believers and users of this lifestyle, as long as they adhere strictly to the plan, they have few to no negative effects. It simply seems shocking to me that it is possible to get such little sleep and still be able to focus and succeed at day to day living.

I thought this post was very interesting. I think it would be very interesting to do experiments to see if there actually were any negative effects involved with these sleep cycles. I can't imagine it would be a very fun process to get used to something like this because personally i feel the negative effects of messing up my sleep schedule for up to a week afterwards. I really enjoyed reading this article you posted but I'm not sure how much of it is believable. The main reason I question it is the fact that it keeps calling certain sleep cycles 'efficient'. Sure it's a time saver but it seems like it could have a negative impact on your health.

Being the college student I am this was a good article to read. My sleep cycle isn't as dramatic as the one above but I can still relate to it in a way. I have to wake up early for work so I almost always nap after that. Like most of us college students I don't sleep enough at night and make up for it during the day. This is a good topic that almost everyone reading this can relate to.

This article was very interesting to me and really caught my attention. My sleep cycle very much relates to this but not as dramatic as the diagram is making it sound like. I'm not sure I really know anyone that only gets two hours of sleep a night, unless its a night before a big test or something, but not every night.I don't think this diagram is very accurate. I would say the average amount of sleep a night would be 5-6 hours.

I have never heard of this before. However, I found the topic quite interesting, relating it to many a studious college night as previous commentors seem to have, and I decided to research it further. The process of sleeping multiple times during a day is called Polyphasic sleeping. The technique is used by the U.S. military, the Canadian Marine pilots, the Italian Air Force, and even NASA. I also read that many psychologists consider the idea of more severe cycles, such as the Dymaxion, unsound, claiming that the short naps restrict various important stages of the sleep cycle. They have though yet to disapprove of biphasic. So nap on, collegiates!

This is a good subject to choose. I've heard of this Dymaxion sleep cycle before. It's actually a very famous story. During world war II, Winston Churchill trained his body to sleep 15 minutes every 4 hours. He did this without skipping those 15 minutes not even once. It actually worked, and his body got used to it. I've heard that it takes 2 weeks to train your body to sleep 15 minutes every 4 hours, and people who have tried it says it's very difficult. Winston Churchill kept this sleep cycle all throughout World War II. I wonder if it's healthy, or what kind of side effects it might have.

I found this article helpful being somewhat sleep deprived these last few weeks with midterms and papers, and I have been feeling guilty napping rather than studying or something more productive. I have tried the multiple nap methods before, but they do not seem to work due to a varied schedule in college. I still find and believe that a good eight to nine hour sleep seems to work the best, getting me from morning till night with no naps and no afternoon drowsiness, however that is just my thought. Sleep is totally unique to each individual and whatever seems to work is probably just fine.

I found this post and the articles very interesting, and I am some what convinced that you could train your body to adjust and feel just fine with that sleeping schedule. However, I would agree that you need to be very strict and stick to it or it most likely will not work out for you. I feel it is possible but I don't think it would work for me. I have a hard time sleeping during the daylight and quite enjoy a solid 8 hours at night. Although I think this may be possible to be successful I don't think it is the best idea for everyone to try. To each their own.

This is an article i found interesting and could relate to quite well. Sleeping the recommended is hard to come by because of everything that happens whether it is studying writing papers or just hanging out with friends. Can I fully trust this article and try taking 4 naps a day. Wellll I wouldnt want to be the test subject for this experiment. Are circadian sleep cycle has become accommodated to sleep when the sun goes down and be awake when the sun comes up. Seems like a very simple way of thinking of it but it works.

This remarkable. People would get so much accomplish if they did not have to sleep. I wish I could change my sleep cycle to a polyphasic sleep cycle. I have also heard that some people do not actually have to sleep much at all. Two hours a night, consecutively and they still are okay. I do not know where to find this article that I read but if I do I will come back to this blog post and post it up. But I read it a while back. I recall it saying something about how different people, usually those who have a more optimistic personality and a lot of extra energy. I find sleep very interesting. The sleep cycle is so complicating that I really don not know what to believe.

This is an awesome topic to chose because it is one that many of us college students can relate to. Although I am frequently up late doing homework and or socializing with friends, I cannot imagine only getting 2 hours of sleep at night like in the Dymaxion cycle. I personally would not be able to function the next day even with the four naps. I also feel like the four naps would get in the way of your day. Always feeling the urge to go home to nap would definitely make me less motivated to get things done. However this is just my opinion, each individual knows what works best for them when it comes to sleep.

It is almost funny how different some people are in regards to how much sleep they need on any given day. Personally I know that there is no way that I would be able to function on a Dymaxion cycle. I am much more like one of those people who gets a decent amount of sleep each night, and then finds some time to take a midday nap.
