The shaping of are interests

During week 6 we were focusing on behavior specifically how we are effected by adds through the use of conditioned stimuli and unconditioned stimuli. Seeing as we had an exam that was mostly based on the conditioned/unconditioned responses and stimulus' it is obvious that this section is a big part of Psychology. What I did not realize is why it is such a big part of Psychology until I had more time to analyze this information.

I found it very interesting as to how much putting an attractive person or an exciting/thrilling environment with whatever is being sold will make someone want that add. Most of the time when I watch adds I don't really think about what is making me want whatever it is I am seeing. However after this class I have found myself looking at adds much more often and discovering the different stimuli that are there to create a feeling (an unconditioned response), which in turn turns into a feeling for whatever is being sold. Through this discussion section and the psychology course I have learned a great deal about how are behavior can be manipulated in different ways and find a lot of it very interesting.

Psychology has a huge influence on advertisement. To me I have noticed four trends when viewing an ad:

1. Your life would be better with this product
2. Buy this get something else for free
3. We’re better than our competitors
4. We’re doing you a favor

I believe every part of an advertisement is thought out and carefully planned to make you unconsciously want their product. If you can pick up on these queues I find that it makes watching advertisements that much more fun.

I agree with you. I cannot wait until the next superbowl to analyze the commercials through this lens. I wonder what the most effective controlled stimulus is? Any ideas? Sex seems to sell very well, but do you think that there is a better one out there?

I had never really thought about it before this class either. It is very interesting how almost anyone can manipulate (or try to) our thoughts. Social psychology is fascinating to me, and I think this would be counted as, or at least similar to social psychology. It's amazing how all of us are so unique and different, but then again, there are a few simple facts that generally describe how we think, and the general reactions, like you are talking about in your post. Advertisers know this, of course, and take full advantage.
