Housing Advice and Recommendation from Former Student

There is an off campus housing website available at: http://www.housing.umn.edu/offcampus/

Also, I would like to particularly suggest the building I live in. It is at 815 13th Ave SE Minneapolis, MN 55414, right on the number 2, 3, and 4 bus line. The landlord is pretty good, keeps up the building very well, and residents are mostly graduate and international students (which means quiet!). I know that there are studios available still, and likely 1 bedrooms. They would be posted on the off campus housing website, and you can view floor plans at www.chrislandproperties.com

If there are any questions about the building, I would be more than happy to have my email address or phone number passed on. I can be reached at rose0465@umn.edu, or 612-845-4654.

As an added thought on housing, there are a few risky property managers/companies that students have difficulty getting things fixed and it is nearly impossible to get damage deposits back from, even if they get a judgment in their favor from small claims court. Twin Cities Housing and Realty company under the management of Jim Eischens is really bad. Doug Doty is also very bad. My advice is to speak with University Student Legal Services about a prospective landlord/company if something looks wrong. They are really great (my husband and I have both used them for legal advice on Dinkytown rentals and legal action). My husband and I know Dinkytown pretty well, and would be open to fielding questions about this area (though we're moving at the end of July, so probably before then).

Hope this helps someone.

Wow. The name Doug Doty brings me back! I rented a room in a house of his in the 1980s--Could it be the same guy? Great house. Awful landlord, which I attributed at the time to his youth. Well neither of us can use that for an excuse any longer. First house I was in that recycled, though, and it made me a believer in that anyway..... Cheers! RJNC
