Planning is the professional discipline that seeks to influence how neighborhoods, cities, and regions develop. Planners bring together knowledge and expertise from sociology, engineering, law, architecture, social work, biology, landscape architecture, urban design, and other disciplines to shape cities and regions. Planners use their skills to assist communities in responding to changing social, economic, environmental, and cultural conditions. (from Official HHH Site)
Hello 1st Year MURPS PASA is currently trying to organize a mentor program connecting incoming HHH students with current students. We are still in the early stages of this process, but I am trying to get a feel for how many 1st year MURPS would be interested in being a mentor to a 1st year student next year. I will be sending out an email probably over spring break related to this subject, as well as making announcements in Am. Cities, Trans. and Land Use, as well as Reg. Anal. Any suggestions about a future mentor program would be great. Your loyal MURP rep, Brant Birkeland
Every year, the Humphrey throws a spring banquet for students, faculty, staff, and anyone else from the university and surrounding community that would like to join us. In the past few years, the traditional skit portion of the banquet has been a compilation of filmed shorts created by Humphrey students and the magic of modern technology. This year, we decided to put these skits on YouTube as well, for the sake of posterity and so that former students and those who were unable to attend the banquet personally can see them.
A note to incoming students: if you watch these videos, I do not guarantee that you will find them funny. In fact, you probably won't. Since most of the gags are inside jokes relating to the Humphrey community or public policy in general, you may be at a loss. But I invite you to watch them anyway, and when you meet Prof. Bob Kudrle for the first time, you can ask him about his love for Zeppelin.
What you should know about the MURPs!
On behalf of the Masters in Urban/Regional Planning (MURP) students at the Humphrey Institute, let me welcome the incoming students. You will find the MURPs are a close knit and down to earth bunch. We have a great crew and they really know what is going on in the world of planning. The planning students even have their own organization. For general information about Humphrey, Renee's message would be a great one to read. That can give you a lot of information about being at the Humphrey Institute.
The faculty are great too. They are really easy to get ahold of and go out of their way to help us out. Carissa Schively and Ed Goetz are the main faculty for the MURP program. I strongly suggest getting involved with the APA (American Planning Association) if you are a planner or are interested in planning issues. It is the professional planning assocation. In case you haven't heard, there are several concentrations within the MURP core(community development, economic development, transportation, land use, environmental planning) for MURPs.
One suggestions about being at Humphrey: Meet as many people as possible (here and outside in the real world)
