Seeking Clues from Our Younger Years

Remember that we will not be attending class on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Your objective will be to get a good start home for Thanksgiving Break. During Thanksgiving Break, you should complete the first part of the "Seeking Clues from Our Younger Years" assignment. To read about the assignment, click here. The second part of the assignment, a 500 word response, will be due on Dec. 6 in class or by email.

Major Exploration Response

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Major Exploration Response is due. You can either turn it in in class (240 Blegen) or send it to me via email.

The Major Exploration Response is the culmination of research you did on two majors or a major and a minor (for which you may use the Major Exploration packet). The Major Exploration Response should meet the following criteria:

* 500 words or more

* Introduce 2 majors or a major and minor that you explored, using a different resource for each.

* Discuss what you learned about the majors/minor and how it is useful to you. You might use the following questions to guide your response, though you don't necessarily have to answer all these questions:

- What surprising details did you learn about the major/minor?

- How will what you learned about the major/minor help you decide what to declare?

- Which resource for exploration did you find more useful? Why?

- At this point, do you think you'll pursue one of these majors/minor? Why or Why not?

October 25th Assignments

I thought I'd post a reminder on upcoming assignments that are by October 25. See below for the assignments. And remember, you don't have to wait until the 25th to hand them in. I am happy to take writing assignments by email (Please include CLA 1001 and your name in the sujbect heading and attach the assignment to the email). For the things you need to hand in in person, you can also stop by at my office hours or Jason's or even find one of us at the large lecture on Wednesday the 18th. The sooner you get it done, the sooner it'll be out of your hair.

* Office Hour Visit: You should visit either with me or with Jason before October 25. My office hour is on Mondays at 2:30-3:30pm in 30 Johnston Hall. Jason's is on Fridays 2:30-4pm at Expresso Expose. If you are unable to meet with one of us during these times, just email and we arrange an appointment.

* Campus Event Assignment: You should also attend one academic-related campus event (program, workshop, panel, etc.) before Oct 25. Be sure to bring a copy of the verification form with you and have an organizer from the event fill it out (A copy of the verification form can be obtained here http://blog.lib.umn.edu/pasch034/poifig/Event%20Attendance%20Verification%20Form.doc). Also, you must write a 500 word (1 page) response that examines what you found out at the event and how it was useful to you. For ideas on good campus events, go to http://blog.lib.umn.edu/pasch034/poifig/Event%20Calender.xls or click on the E-Newsletter link at http://psysci.class.umn.edu/index.html.

* Unravel 1 Library Session: CLA 1001 students must also attend the Unravel 1 Library Session and show me a copy of their certificate of completion. To sign up for a session, go to http://www.lib.umn.edu/registration/index.phtml#eventidXX20 and pick out a time. If one of these times do not work, you can also contact the Unravel organizer Lynne Beck at l-beck@tc.umn.edu to schedule a different time.

Study Session and Other Groups

Hey CLA 1001,

The people who came to my "office hour" today had the idea to start a facebook group for those people on the facebook. I just started it, it is FIG PSYCH, so if you search for it you can join up. It's picture is a plate of food.

For people who are not on Facebook, i will post any discussion on the blog from it.

I am also giving you all a link to "campus events" that are coming up, so check that out!

the link is: http://events.tc.umn.edu/months.xml There are a TON of events.

****Keep in mind that not all of these events may fill the requirements the assignment asks for, so look over the info first****

Also for those of you who live in University Sponsered Housing, your C.A.s and Halls have events going on ALL THE TIME. There are programs pretty much weekly.

Remember this Blog is a great place to post study group times and locations, i encourage you to do it!

I am out

Faculty Contacts for Faculty Interview

As promised, below are some faculty members you may choose to contact for your faculty interview. These people have interviewed with CLA 1001 students in the past, but have not been ask this semester whether they want to participate. Hence, as with any faculty member, be sure to tell the person you contact why you are asking for an interview.

Robert Schlauch (Associate Professor, Speech-Language-Hearing Science)
schla001@umn.edu
115 Shevlin Hall
Office Ph: 612-624-7001

Of course, you don't have to limit yourself to these professors. You could ask to interview a professor in one of your non-FIG courses. Or you can use Class Search (http://onestop2.umn.edu/courseinfo/searchcriteria.jsp?institution=UMNTC) to identify a professor in a major that you are interested in.

Be sure to review the Faculty Interview Assignment description before you contact a faculty member. Remember, the faculty member you interview must be a professor (not a teaching assistant) and cannot be one who teaches one of your FIG courses. Be professional, courteous, and respectful of the faculty member’s time. Seek the faculty member’s permission to interview him or her before you appear. Try to meet the faculty member during his or her office hours. If you want to tape the interview, be sure to ask the person before recording. Let him or her know how much time you’ll take (probably about a half hour) and try to stick to that timeframe. If you think you need to take longer than the agreed time, ask the faculty member if this is okay. Thank the faculty member when you are done.

Email me with the person you intend to interview, your focus or angle (what you want to learn about) for the interview, and three original questions you will ask related to your focus. These emails are due by the end of the day on October 11.

Just come up with a class related question, whether it be about future assignments or your adjustment to campus, and stop on in. Get to know your T.A.

HI! I am Jason, your T.A. for CLA 1001. I thought I would take this time to tell you all a little about myself, and about how I can help you out. I am going to talk about my experiences at the University with First-Year Students. My involvement at the U, some of my background, and what I hope to offer you.

First, I have been working in the Orientation & First-Year Programs since my freshman year. I have been a New Student Weekend Leader, a New Student Weekend Co-Chair, an Orientation Leader, and I am now working for Housing and Residential life as a Community Advisor in Frontier Hall (Holla).

I have been involved in a few things at the U from campus jobs, to clubs, and organizations. I currently hold a cabinet position in my Fraternity (not frat, frat is a dirty four letter word), and I baby sit off campus.

I am 22, from Duluth Minnesota. I am a HUGE Packer Fan, but I don’t like watching football (it is weird, but I’d rather play). I am on Facebook. I have two stuffed animals here on campus with me, their names are P.J. (a Giraffe), and Slush ( a Husky). On Wednesdays you will probably see me dressing with some formality (I.E. shirt, and tie, or nice shirt, and sports coat) but that is only because my mom said I have to. That is right, I am 22, and my mom still tells me what to wear.

If you ever have questions about anything on/off campus, about the class, or about anything in general, please just give me an E-mail. Or come have coffee with me during my office hours.

See You all on Wednesday in Blegen room 5 (for real this time).

Jason Griffiths

Assignment due Sept. 15.

Remember that our first assignment is due on September 15. See http://blog.lib.umn.edu/pasch034/poifig/assignments/ (Liberal Arts Article & Response) for information on how to complete this assignment.

Welcome to CLA 1001

Hi folks! Welcome to the CLA 1001 blog for the Perspectives on Identity FIG group. On this site, you'll find all sorts of information and updates related to CLA 1001.
