Chaos and murder strike the farm.
About three months ago my girlfriend informed me we would be getting chickens. At first I was not thrilled about this news. After a couple of weeks however I became kind of attached to them. I was very proud of my chickens or "the ladies" as I called them. My morning ritual became brush my teeth then go collect some eggs and feed them. I felt we had formed a special bond. They of course knew my arrival signaled a sizeable portion of grain. In return I enjoyed fresh eggs. One morning I went out to feed my chickens but there was no sound. I opened the door to see a flurry of feathers. The chickens had been murdered. I investegated the scene to find that the same creatures responsible for the defacing of my car had killed my chickens. This news did not affect my girlfriend as I thought being the sensitive animal lover she is. I on the other hand get very upset when I don't get my omlet.

oh, that's neat. it's fun to have chickens, and fresh eggs, ged outa here!
I think that you might want to make sure that those are real racoons. I know they are smart animals, but these seem to be too smart for their own good. I have never heard of racoons attacking chickens before too. It just seems really strange to me.
What did you do about the racoons anyway, did you avenge the chickens deaths?

apropops of nothing -- except chickens -- i'm thinking of a couple folks i met recently who came to northern MN years ago to do the back-to-the-land thing. they came from boston -- very citified folks. they set up camp north of hibbing in the serious sticks, and they got a bunch of chickens. they had an older, local couple over for dinner one night, and just after the meal the city youngsters excused themselves to "take care of the chickens." they went outside, as they did each evening, and started herding the chickens into the shed so as to portect the birds from predators overnight. chickens being chickens, this herding operation took a long time and involved lots of running around and flapping by both humans and birds. when the task was completed, the youngsters came back inside to find their neighbors collapsed on the couch, exhausted from laughing at the whole scene. when they'd regained their composure, they explained to the young'uns that chickens will put themselves away at night and all the humans would have to do is close the door on the coop.

Sorry to hear about your chickens.
I would be investigating it some more and go hunting for the culprits.
Then buys ome more chickens, so that you can have your eggs.
Cheers

Racoons kill chickens often (in Florida).
We must lock them in the henhouse at night, and that solves the problem (you know, the "old fox in the henhouse" parable, with racoons as the killers)
...They will kill achicken, then, not being able to get it out of the coop, go back and kill another...Pretty brutal.
Hi There,
It is a rather sad story. I live in Australia and lost a number of chickens mainly taken by snakes. There are special aviaries (kind of modified garden sheds with a steel mash on the front) that you can by to keep snakes and other creatures away.
You might have to eventually get a special outdoor building like that to keep your chicken in. Just an idea. All the best!
I am in Oz as well and know exactly what you talking about. I keep my chickens in an aviary and have been managed to keep them alive for a while now.
I would like to thnkx for the efforts you've put in writing this website. I am hoping the same high-grade website post from you in the upcoming as well. In fact your creative writing skills has inspired me to get my own web site now. Really the blogging is spreading its wings fast. Your write up is a great example of it.
Then his wife came on into the comments and said how dare I say bad things about her husband, on his property. No response to that, it WAS his property. On your own property, you set the rules- open discussion or echo chamber, your choice. Or your wifes choice.
This is indeed a very profound subject you have touched upon. And just like the examples you have quoted, it purely depends on the individual. Good, Better and Best are not absolute measurements - they are an individuals perceptions!
