Thanks to everyone who took part in our December Asking the Big Questions discussion. We had a great conversation about population and restoring the Earth (chapters 7 & 8). Check out this website on steady state economic theory.

Have a great break and we'll see you on Thursday, February 12th when we discuss feeding people and designing cities (chapters 9 & 10). Our guest speaker will be Cheryl Contant, UMM Vice-Chancellor For Academic Affairs and Dean. As always, Plan B can be read online at book.

Reading for 2008

For our inaugural year the book Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization by Lester R. Brown has been chosen. In a bold revision of his earlier work, Brown maps out a comprehensive plan to help save the planet from the scourge of climate change, unnecessary poverty and coming oil shortages.

"It is decision time," says Brown. "Like earlier civilizations that got into environmental trouble, we have to make a choice. We can stay with business as usual and watch our economy decline and our civilization unravel, or we can adopt Plan B and be the generation that mobilizes to save civilization. Our generation will make the decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to come."

Our first discussion will be Thursday, September 11 on Chapter 1: "Entering a New World". The full text chapters of the book can be read online or downloaded at Plan B 3.0. Social time starts at 6:30 PM with speaker and discussion from 7:00-8:00 PM. The full year's schedule and reading is listed below.
