Join the Discussion

Asking the Big Questions is a new book discussion forum co-sponsored by Briggs Library and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Minnesota, Morris. It is open to both the university and Morris communities.

The second Thursday of each month we will meet in the McGinnis Room on the lower level of Briggs Library from 7:00 PM-8:00 PM to discuss and hear from expert guest speakers who will give informed perspectives on the reading. Local impacts will highlighted whenever possible. There will also be a social time from 6:30-7:00 PM where light snacks and refreshments will be served. Each year a book will be chosen that tackles an issue of great importance to our world or society. Reading is encouraged, but not required.

Hope to see you there!

Reading for 2008

For our inaugural year the book Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization by Lester R. Brown has been chosen. In a bold revision of his earlier work, Brown maps out a comprehensive plan to help save the planet from the scourge of climate change, unnecessary poverty and coming oil shortages.

"It is decision time," says Brown. "Like earlier civilizations that got into environmental trouble, we have to make a choice. We can stay with business as usual and watch our economy decline and our civilization unravel, or we can adopt Plan B and be the generation that mobilizes to save civilization. Our generation will make the decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to come."

Our first discussion will be Thursday, September 11 on Chapter 1: "Entering a New World". The full text chapters of the book can be read online or downloaded at Plan B 3.0. Social time starts at 6:30 PM with speaker and discussion from 7:00-8:00 PM. The full year's schedule and reading is listed below.

  • September 11: Chapter 1
  • October 9: Chapters 2 & 3
  • November 13: Chapters 4, 5 & 6
  • December 11: Chapters 7 & 8
  • February 12: Chapters 9 & 10
  • March 12: Chapters 11 & 12
