In this constantly changing world with its multitude and variety of opportunities and risks, individuals need to think carefully about their career choices. For those who are pursuing or have completed advanced degrees in science and want to explore more than the academic options there are a wide variety of careers possible outside academia. By default scientific training in an institute of higher education trains one only to enter academia. This workshop is designed to help participants begin to think about what other career options might work best for them and what steps they need to take to experiment with and pursue those options.

During the workshop you will hear from people who have made that transition and also be given some specific ways to generate your own options as well as a personally focused methodology for beginning to explore them. After the workshop we will move to a nearby watering hole for those who are interested in more informal conversation.

Speakers:

Amy Moore PhD. is a scientist, educator, and consultant. She utilizes her 15 years of experience as a biomedical scientist and clinical educator to bring perspective to a broad range of projects and clients within life sciences. In addition to being principal of Moore BioBusiness, Amy is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Carleton College.

Barbara Nelsen PhD. is the founder of Nelsen Biomedical, a consulting practice providing technology commercialization and business growth strategies to life science companies. Clients range from start-ups to well-established life sciences companies, venture capital firms and research institutions. Barbara has held roles ranging from partner in a new venture initiative, to business development for a pharmaceutical company, and director of cancer therapeutics at a small biotech.

Paula Norbom is the founder of Talencio, a specialized staffing firm. The company provides a broad span of functional expertise, from science and engineering to quality assurance, regulatory consulting and executive-level strategic support. Since starting the company in 2008, Paula has built a roster of more than 3,000 professionals who serve clients throughout the country.

Sally Power is a Professor Emeritus of the College of Business, University of St Thomas. She is a specialist in career transitions who has worked with over 1,000 working adults to refine their career directions for greater success. She is the author of The Mid-Career Success Guide (Praeger, 2006).

Bartley studies the early record of life on Earth, about 1-2 billion years ago when microbes (mainly bacteria and algae) dominated the seas. Hecht is looking to understand the mechanisms by which carcinogens are metabolically activated and detoxified in humans. They will open the evening event, giving short lectures on the latest research in their fields.

Following the lectures, we will be holding a cocktail reception, giving you the opportunity to network with the speakers and other attendees.

Welcome back to a new year and a new semester. This month we are kick-starting a month-long group writing session. Join a cross-disciplinary group of writers to set and achieve a project goal. Bring any project or portion of a larger project, whether it be a fellowship application, introduction, or entire manuscript. This time will be most useful for people who benefit from some structure and who work better around others with common goals. Participants should come with writing goals for the session. Each meeting will be at least one hour of writing, with the possibility for peer editing and feedback. There is no formal instruction.

There will be four weekly meetings of 2 hours each (7-9pm), and participants should make a good faith effort to attend all 4 meetings.

Tues. Feb, 12 - Folwell Hall 123 (East Bank)
