The New 35W Bridge Open

The Minnesota Daily and the Star Tribune reported on the new 35W bridge is open. It opened Thursday morning at 5:00am. The Daily said the bridge was completed just 13 months after the original bridge collapsed. They also told students' points of view for those who were at the opening and dying to be the first across the bridge. The first person across after vehicles from agencies that sent first responders to the bridge collapse last August drove across, Don Heinrich of New Brighton was the first to drive his car onto the University Avenue on-ramp to the bridge.

The Star Tribune gave the perspective of a north Minneapolis man during his experience of the bridge opening. He drove a motorcycle to the event with an American flag attached to his sidecar. The Strib also says authorities would not allow spectators to gather for the crossing too early to prevent major backups but nearby city streets were filling up overnight.
