He's Baaaack

***UPDATE: If you are a graduate student or faculty member who blogs, please consider taking this survey***

You may not have noticed, with everything else that is going on, but Dr. "Tribble" is back with further views on blogging while on the academic job hunt. In his most recent column on the subject he asks "They Shoot Messengers, Don't They?"

I stand by my earlier comments about why I blog under my own name, and the protections I think (hope) I have instituted to be sure this blog presents me, my personal life, and my scholarly works in progress in a positive--and honest--light.

I think this topic is one worth continuing to discuss. I am glad to read this follow-up to the original article, and think it has some valid points.

Yet there are some troubling aspects to Tribble's comments as well. Yes, I agree that "'be careful what you say,' is good general advice for the job seeker." But I shudder at the idea that job seekers must also "be careful who you are." Time was not that long ago (and maybe it has not passed at all) that someone could have written a column saying, "Not that I personally have anything against ___________s--I get it, but," and here I am quoting Tribble, "Many in the tenured generation don't, and they'll be sitting on hiring committees for years to come."

Hmmm.
