On Kids and Fibbing

Another FSoS-affiliated faculty member was featured recently on U of M Moment. Marti Erickson--or, as my daughters refer to her, "Doctor Marti"--speaks briefly in this segment about children, lying, and when parents should (and should not) be concerned.

This is a very appropriate topic in our household right now. I kind of feel like I am raising a duo of future attorneys--We have had to develop a whole vocabulary for the various levels of non-truth-telling: there's outright lying and the less harsh sounding fibbing. There's "telling a story" or "making up a dream." There's mis-speaking and changing one's mind. There's guessing and joking and "pulling someone's leg."

My favorite word that the girls use: hypothesis. For example after a long, involved explanation of something, when I ask "Is that true" they'll say "Well, I don't know, Mommy. That's just my high-pofessis."

Maybe they'll be academics afterall!
