What to say?

I do not even know what to say.

Of course, like many folks my thoughts are on the recent and subsequent destruction. Like many, I am still checking in with colleagues, family and friends in the impacted areas.

But besides the horrors ahead for the folks there, more ugliness is ahead for us all. I am sure of it. And it is already surfacing. And it is very much steeped in the complex race and class issues of the region that I previously discussed in this post. Issues that are still very much an underlying current in our nation as a whole.

We need to pay attention to these discussions. We need to take them seriously.

But I can't even think straight about all this right now. Opportunities to help and donate are everywhere, and that is where I'll put my focus for now.

Be well.

I have sobbed and sobbed these last few days. I wish I was closer to help out in a more meaningful way. Did you read the NY Times? The LA Times? Sob, sob, sob.

Visit my site today, there's a great link to Geraldo Rivera and another guy reporting from N.O. It is not to be missed. This is a pivotal time in America. Our children's lives will be different because of the events of this week.

Have a good day tomorrow. Hug your girls close.

I agree; we must focus now on opportunities to help. There is overwhelming immediate need. Nevertheless, my mind wanders occasionally to the future. I worry. What will happen to the hardest hit regions of New Orleans where the poorest lived? Will buildings be leveled and, if so, who will make decisions about the land? Whose interests will be served? Who will develop the land and what will be built? Who will be able to afford to live there? How will the people of New Orleans, scattered throughout the nation, have a voice in what happens next to their city?
