Woman's False Rape Accusation Under Investigation

Police are investigating a woman's filing of a false report of sexual assault last October in her St. Paul, Minn., office, authorities said. The woman had consensual sexual contact with a man she met on the Internet, police said.

"While we are disappointed that the false report resulted in limited and valuable public resources being unnecessarily invested, we are pleased that our community is not dealing with another sexual predator in our midst," Police Chief John Harrington said.

According to the Star Tribune, Harrington expressed the "extreme rarity" of false rape reports.

Police officials are unsure about the woman's motives, reports the Pioneer Press. Her investigation is based on charges of falsely reporting a crime and obstructing the legal process, police said.
