New pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now known as Francis

Cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new pope on Wednesday, and Bergoglio adopted the name Francis, CNN reported.
Francis, 76, was born in Buenos Aires, and he is the first South American pope, the New York Times reported. He is also the first non-European pope since more than 1,200 years ago.
Pope Francis is conservative on social issues; he is against gay marriage and abortion, NBC reported.
His parents were Italian immigrants, and he is known for helping the poor, the New York Times reported.
