If you guys have not heard, the Social Sciences building has been taken over! A group of students upset about what has been going on at the U has been having a sit in of sorts. There are links at the bottom of this message if you would like to learn more or get in contact with them. There is also a list of what is going on as of 8:30 this morning, so it may change. But I think you folks should check it out! They are really nice, and there is usually food of some sort (yesterday there was pizza from Mesa) and I think we can all support what they are doing. I have just been going there and doing my homework and hanging out when I have down time, but maybe more of you will want to get involved. So spread the word!!!!!

hi folks,
Here's our schedule of events for today so far. Lots more organizing is happening on the ground, so we need your help! Please come to down to the space as soon as you can to plug in!

General meeting - 1 pm - (come down to learn what's going on, discuss our goals, and help out with our working groups! -- and enjoy free food and coffee!)

Transgender 101 workshop - 4 pm

Dinner - 6:30

more to come in a bit!
in solidarity,
Eli

Tongues Untied: GLBTQ People of Color Discussions
Monthly on 1st & 3rd Thursdays (new day)
from 4:00-6:00 PM
Appleby Hall 41

Queer People of Color (QPOC) is back on campus, under a new name: Tongues Untied! Join us for bi-monthly discussions with other GLBTQ Students of Color and FREE FOOD! With the growing population of GLBTQ students, staff & faculty of color on predominately white and heteronormative college campuses, we see the need to create a space we can call our own to discuss issues that affect us, and have respectful open discussions concerning the intersections of race, gender and sexual identity. Undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, community members -- all are welcome! Meetings will be held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month in Appleby Hall 41. Now open to white allies, though QPOC voices will be prioritized. For more info, contact Jason Jackson atjacks973@umn.edu. Check us out on our Facebook page!

Turning a "Queer Eye" on the Criminal Justice System with Author and Activist, Joey Mogul

This sounds like a perfect match for our class this semester!!
On February 4th, the Human Rights Program is proud to host Joey Mogul, co-author of groundbreaking book, Queer (In)Justice. Ms. Mogul will be discussing the upcoming book which turns a "queer eye" on the criminal legal system in the United States.

Drawing on years of research, activism, and legal advocacy, Queer (In)Justice is a searing examination of queer experiences--as criminal defendants, prisoners, and survivors of violent crimes. Mogul and co-authors Andrea Ritchie and Kay Whitlock unpack queer criminal archetypes--like "gleeful gay killers," "lethal lesbians," and "disease spreaders"--to illustrate the punishment of queer expression, regardless of whether a crime was ever committed. Tracing stories from the judicial bench to the streets and behind prison bars, the authors prove the policing of sex and gender both bolsters and reinforces racial and gender inequalities. Find out more on this book project here: Queer Injustice.org

February 4th from 3:00PM to 5:00PM in Room 609 Social Sciences, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The event is free and open to the public.
