Gophers gut out season opener

The Gophers hockey team survived its season opener against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The unranked RPI outplayed the Gophers for most of the game getting out to a 3-0 lead and taking a 3-1 lead into the third period.

The Gophers responded with three unanswered goals in the final period. The game winner coming from sophomore Kyle Okposo on a power play with only 1:11 left in the game. It was a good test for the Gophers in there opener and gave the team valuable experience in a close game.

The win gave Gophers coach Dan Lucia his 500th victory and moved his team into the weekends championship game versus Michigan, who defeated Boston College 4-3 in overtime.
