"A good leader leads from the front, gets out, meets people and listens to their stories" (Branson, 2012).

This week's definition: Leadership is a developmental process of skills to influence, serve, and create initiatives while building a culture. A good leader is able to listen to others' experiences and help them better themselves.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: This week I tried to simply put into my own words my definition of leadership without using quotes. After this semester I have learned that leadership is developed and is a process, leadership involves several different skills. I thought this week's reading, "How offline gatherings Affect Online Communities: When virtual community members 'meet up'" was interesting in that they actually did research on the topic. I read a lot of forums and contribute to them so I thought it was interesting to see how they analyzed online relationships. I think the topic is important because more people are using online resources to make friends and relationships.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: This week I tried to incorporate both Branson's quote of what a leader is, with part of my previous definitions of a leader. I found this week's reading on Intentional Change valuable for leadership and saw how it could be useful outside of this class. It discussed the elements of change and the steps in how to change. We see this in our every day lives whether it is part of a formal program to change or when we personally decide we want to change.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: My overall view of what a leader is did not change this week because of these articles. But I did find the articles valuable in teaching me the general structures of teams, development stages, and the roles. I found the article, Yoon, S., & Johnson, S. (2008). Phases and Patterns of Group Development in Virtual Learning Teams, very interesting in the fact that this is what we are doing in this class. The findings of their research of virtual group development stages of orientation, scheduling, exploration, work and decision, progress check and evaluation, refinement and formatting, and termination are all stages I have learned by working in virtual groups in this class so far. Another interesting find was that, "Complex Adaptive Systems proponents (McGrath et al. 2000) believe that entities like virtual learning teams are adaptive and self-managing systems that are capable of initiating and implementing actions to find effective work or communication patterns" (Yoon & Johnson, 2008). This is exactly what can be seen in our group and how we have developed thus far.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: This week I decided to completely change my definition of leadership. For our group assignment it was suggested to use Google+ and the quote popped up on my feed from Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group. I felt as if this quote fit well with our framework this week as cultural actors. Last week a friend discussed with me how there was no diversity in her workplace when she started 10 years ago at a multi-billion dollar company. There were not any people of color or women, in leadership roles in the department she worked for. Presently things have gradually improved but not by much. This week's readings helped me realize that these cultural/diversity problems do still exist. They gave me insightful information on how to deal with it and where it comes from.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: My definition this week in comparison to last week remained the same. The reason for this was that I felt like the readings for this week did not define what a leader is, but I did find the readings to be helpful in giving tips on how to become a better leader. The article, "Identifying Each Person's One Big Thing" gave me a lot of valuable information. I've always felt as if I have too many weaknesses to be considered a leader. This article made me realize that every leader has areas for growth and that they are not perfect. Being aware of the weaknesses I have, is a step towards becoming a better leader already.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: In this week's definition I added the word "serves" to my definition of what a leader does. The reading, "Becoming a Servant Leader: Do you have what it takes?" really influenced me. This reading was valuable by making me realize there isn't just one clear cut model of what a leader is. I never knew there was such a thing as a servant leader. Sometimes I feel as though I'm not a leader in the sense of what everyone thinks of a leader. But I can identify myself with more of the characteristics of a servant leader.

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: Between this week's definition and last week's definition, there wasn't much of a difference but I added the word adaptive to my definition to describe a leader. From the course reading the most important aspect I got from it was that a leader needs to be able to adapt to the challenges of a fast-paced environment. As an economics major graduating this semester, it was important for me to learn how to handle challenges in the changing economic environment. These essential 21st century leadership elements will most likely help me when I enter the workforce.

This week's definition: A leader is a person who influences; "leaders set strategy; they motivate; they create a mission; they build a culture" (Goleman, 2000, p. 2). They do not "simply bull their way through to a conclusion...as though getting it resolved were more important than getting it right" (Kidder, 2003, p. 13).

Analysis of the differences in the definitions: Between this week's definition and last week's definition, I added a line from Kidder's "Overview: The ethics of right vs. right". When I think of a leader the first person that comes to mind is Gandhi. His mission was led in a way that did not simply resolve a problem, but he did it in the right way. After reading the line in Kidder's article, I knew I had to incorporate it into my definition of leadership. When writing my definition of leadership each week, I think i have been focusing more on what a leader does and ignoring what creates a leader. I have been having trouble figuring out how all of these elements we have read in our course readings have anything to do with the definition of a leader, but I am beginning to see how values and ethics are the foundations in creating leaders.
