Light Rail!

Yay! The light rail is open all the way! I love these things...I honestly cannot stop myself from talking so much about expanding it around town. That was the best thing about Europe. I love being able to walk everywhere. Minneapolis is similar, people are able to bike around a lot (at least compared to St. Louis). But we all know Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the best place to go biking.

Anyhow...I hope in time that more U.S. cities will adopt a more pedestrian-oriented or at least a more pedestrian-freindly environment. The German city of Freiburg, even with a mere 100,000 residents (think Sioux Falls), has a tram system and a developed downtown pedestrian zone (as in no cars). (not to mention a strange gutter system).

One of my great pleasures in life is walking around and taking pictures...not necessarily tourist pictures, just pictures of strange views, inspiring views, or just things that are cute. I could do that all the time in europe...however getting around anywhere in the U.S. (midwest at least) requires a car. I'm hoping for a change.

I've been getting around without a car (for the most part) for 6 months. I have friends who have been going car-less for years. The light rail is great and I use it a lot, but a bike can get you anywhere in town almost as quick as a car (unless you want to go way out in the suburbs).

Hi,
I'm a 54 year old pedestrian activist running for mayor of Glens Falls,NY on a platform of closing off the downtown to most car traffic, preserving our architectural heritage, creating a city for everyone, not just the people privileged to own cars, i.e. the Private Car Monopoly. I'd love to get your input.
