I decided to use the snow boot as my archetypical product. People often slip in the winter and injure themselves, and this may largely be related to the footware they have on. With my product chosen, I applied SCAMPER to winter boots.
Instead of relying on the insulation of the boot to keep feet warm, solar material can be applied to the surface of the boot to keep the feet warm and also melt the ice below the feet.
Boots with an alert system to communicate with others after an accident.
I looked to Arctic animals for inspiration. Polar bears are able to walk easily on ice due to the papillae on their paws. By incorporating this onto the bottom of boots, people will have less difficulty on ice.
I wanted the boot to not only offer the feet protection, but the whole body as well during a fall. An airbag will deploy from the heel of the boot as the individual begins to fall.
PUT TO OTHER USE.
Boots go wherever an individual does, so why not use the boots as a tracking device? This is great for young kids and the elderly so others can watch out for them.
Boots are bulky. By using lighter materials that are more contoured to the foot, they will be less cumbersome on snowy days.
It would be nice to only need one pair of boots. That is hard when the weather changes though...by incorporating removable soles, people can insert different soles that will be more appropriate for the weather on any given day.
I used a morphological analysis matrix to generate more ideas.
Here are the two products I created from the help of my matrix.
The first pair of boots have salt in the sole and also disperses salt as you walk. The boot also has a cuff that can be unfurled to provide more protection/warmth for your legs as the snow gets deeper.
The second product is a boot that has pockets that hold heat packs to provide extra warmth. The sole of the boot is metal and has a cheese grater-like texture so you don't slip on the ice.
I went back and looked over the ideas that were generated from my brainstorming session. I found three ideas from the brainstorming session that I think could be feasible products.
The black ice sensor for your car
Salt is sometimes difficult to see on the road/sidewalk. By making it colorful, it is more visible for drivers/pedestrians
Suit that inflates on impact with the ground
After blue sky idea generation, brainstorming, structured ideation, and some additional thought, here are my top 10 ideas:
Full spectrum overhead lighting to combat SAD in wintertime
Snowshoes that leave cool tracks in the snow
The inflatable suit
Boots with polar bear paw-like soles
Salt dispensing boots with optional leg cover
Black ice sensor for the car
Boots with removable soles
Transportation service for seniors in wintertime
Snow pants with extra padding for kids when they slip while skating
