Congratulations to Wilma Koutstaal!

Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations to Wilma Koutstaal, whose book The Agile Mind was co-awarded the 2012 APA William James Book Award. The award, sponsored by APA Division I (General Psychology) was announced at the August meeting of the American Psychological Association. The award committee was expansive in their praise of the book, which offers an innovative theory regarding the workings of the human mind. The committee commented that Wilma did a particularly impressive job integrating material from several areas of psychology, suggesting many fruitful approaches through which to explore associations among cognition, emotion, and the environment.

We're very pleased to know about this wonderful recognition of Wilma's work!

Congratulations to Auke Tellegen!

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating Professor Emeritus Auke Tellegen. Auke won the Distinguished Contributions to Assessment Psychology award from Section IX of Division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. The award was presented last week at the annual meeting of the APA.

Along with the award, the honoree is invited to present a talk on a topic of his/her choosing. Auke's talk was entitled "Feeling, Thinking, Acting: Real Dimensions of Personality and Psychopathology, or a Persistent Tradition, or Both?". I am told that the talk proved to be provocative, entertaining and inspiring.

Brenton Wiernik Winner of APA Undergraduate Research Award!

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating faculty member, Deniz Ones and her student, Brenton Wiernik. Brenton was recently honored as the first winner of APA division 34's undergraduate student research award.
Brenton's paper was entitled,"Age differences in employee green behaviors and their generalizability across 11 countries." The choice of Brenton's paper as the best was unanimous among the judges.

Congratulations to Don Brunquell!

Dear Colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to inform you that Don Brunquell, adjunct faculty member at the Institute of Child Development and in the CSPR program in the Department of Psychology, has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the the fourth annual APA Ethics Committee Award for Outstanding Contributions to Ethics Education. Don was presented with a plaque during the Ethics Committee's invitational breakfast on Friday August 3rd at the annual APA Convention.

We congratulate Don on this outstanding honor. We are fortunate to include him as a member of our instructional team!

We are delighted to announce that Professor Monica Luciana has agreed to
serve as the next chair of Psychology.

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Professor Monica Luciana has agreed to
serve as the next chair of Psychology. Monica has provided strong
leadership to the department as the associate chair for research for
the past several years, and she is extraordinarily well-prepared to
assume the leadership of your distinguished department. I am looking
forward to working together with her and you to continue to build the
excellence of Minnesota Psychology.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Gordon Legge
for his outstanding leadership of the department during the past seven
years. Gordon has provided inspired and wise direction for the
department through the recent turbulent period in higher education,
and his exceptional academic values and strong administrative gifts
have strengthened the department's long tradition of distinction in
research and teaching. I would also like to thank the members of the
Department of Psychology's Executive Committee--Pat Frazier, Jonathan
Gewirtz, Marti Hope Gonzales, Yuhong Jiang and Mark Snyder--for their
considerable efforts in identifying the next chair of Psychology and
in recommending Monica for this important position.

The Psychology Department proudly announces the Spring 2012 winners of the Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement. The two candidates who best articulated the link between their academic studies in psychology and community projects were selected for the $500 award.

The Psychology Department proudly announces the Spring 2012 winners of the Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement. The two candidates who best articulated the link between their academic studies in psychology and community projects were selected for the $500 award. One of these students was further honored to become the first Natalis Award recipient, funded by alumnus Dr. Jonathan Hoistad of Natalis Counseling & Psychology Solutions.

Lauren Maccoux (Natalis Award) and Brittany Berenz are both interning this academic year with Washburn Center for Children. Washburn is a community mental health center focused on children's mental health that helps children with social, emotional and behavioral problems and their families.

Lauren's internship is within the Family Focused Program, which serves children from three to five years of age and their families who are at risk for child abuse and/or neglect. Lauren assists staff with the children's therapy in the class room and interacts one on one with them.

Brittany works with a therapist/teacher team providing therapeutic support to school age children with severe emotional problems. The goal is to foster emotional and behavioral regulation skills, support coping skills and help them learn to function normally at home, at school and in the community.

Congratulations to Lauren and Brittany for successfully linking their studies in psychology with public engagement! These awards clearly make a difference in the lives and futures of our undergraduate students.

The Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are made possible by the generous donations of alumni and friends to the Psychology Undergraduate Scholarship Fund. The goal of this program is to provide grants that assist our undergraduate Psychology majors in linking their psychology studies with outreach and public engagement.

Dear Psychology Colleagues,

I'm pleased to tell you that Professor Colin DeYoung has won a SAGE
Young Scholars Award from the Foundation for Personality and Social
Psychology, which will be given at the SPSP conference later this
month. Colin is a member of our Personality, Individual Differences,
and Behavior Genetics (PIB) program.

Let's all congratulate Colin on this splendid recognition of his
research accomplishments!
