Another Congratulations to Irv Gottesman!

Winner of the 2013 Grawemeyer Award for Psychology

We are thrilled to announce that our friend and colleague, Irv
Gottesman, has won the 2013 Grawemeyer Award for Psychology. The award
is conferred by the University of Louisville.
Irv is currently a Senior Psychology Fellow in our department. He is
the retired Irving and Dorothy Bernstein professor of adult psychiatry
at the University of Minnesota. He is also the Sherrell J. Aston
Professor of Psychology Emeritus at the University of Virginia.

Irv is renowned for his influential work on etiological models of
schizophrenia and particularly for the concept of the "endophenotype".
Endophenotypes are underlying traits that are present in people who
carry a risk for developing particular disorders but who have not
necessarily developed the full symptomatic presentation.

Irv will receive a $100,000 prize for his work.

The history of the award is as follows, as summarized by the
University of Louisville: The Grawemeyer Fund, housed at the
University of Louisville, has added psychology to its distinguished
list of awards categories. The first University of Louisville
Grawemeyer Award for Psychology was given in 2001. This award is given
annually. The $100,000 Grawemeyer award recognizes outstanding ideas
in all areas of the discipline of Psychology. Nominations are judged
on the basis of originality, creativity, scientific merit, and breadth
of impact on the field of Psychology. Charles Grawemeyer, an
industrialist, engineer and entrepreneur from Louisville, Ky., had a
life-long passion for music, education and religious studies.
Consequently, he chose to honor ideas in the arts, humanities and
sciences. Rather than rewarding recent or lifetime personal
achievements, Grawemeyer wanted to recognize single powerful ideas or
creative works.

We are extremely proud of Irv. Please join me in congratulating him on
this outstanding honor!

Regards,
Monica
