Hi everyone! My friend is organizing an event called Tent State the will coincide with Campus to Capital Week. Here is some of our mission statement/background information:
Tent State is an idea that started at Rutger’s University in 2003. Tent State will be a visual protest against the complacent campus lifestyle of many of the students at the University of Minnesota. Our goal is to create an alternative campus that for one week will be the site of many events such as speakers, forums, documentaries, teach-ins, music, art, and much more. All of these events will take place outside Northrop Mall, a highly traversed area at the university. To further create a sense of community we will be setting up tents and camping out in the area, hence the name tent state. Many of the events will be put on by both student groups and local community groups. Through this event we hope to engage students in their community be presenting them with many issues that face the world today and then showing them groups that allow them to act on these issues.
I wanted to encourage everyone to get involved if they are interested (check out the group on facebook or email me) and to let me know if you know of or are part of a group that may be interested. We are also looking for volunteers to conduct short workshops. These can be on just about anything you want (whether it involves yoga, art, or anything) so if you have a special skill or know someone who does, let me know!
