Hey guys- I wanted to write something about the last presentation today, my group's presentation.

I did the section on Sexual Abuse Against Children. I really feel as though I wasn't able to do it justice, and of course 45 minutes is never enough time to talk about any kind of violence, but I personally feel like I made a mistake in how I presented the information. I want to apologize if anything mentioned was problematic or if the way in which I presented the information was not serious enough. I have been personally struggling with issues of sexual abuse, especially in the past few weeks, so this topic was hard for me to research, let alone speak about. I basically went to websites intended for child protection and found statistics and pamphlets they hand out to families and children and listed what they said to tell parents and children. I know I should have been more thorough but it was really hard for me to read and interpret this information. The only way I got through the presentation without crying today was to shut myself down emotionally and plow through what I had, and I was not sensitive about it at all. I am afraid I offended, which was the last thing I wanted, but it was just very hard for me to stand in front of you and talk about these issues. I was insensitive to issues that touch a lot of people, and I am sorry. I didn't want to be vulnerable, but that is what this is all about, isn't it? Being open?
I wish I had had a chance to discus my last topic, Female Genital Mutilation, because I feel it goes unnoticed and is thought of as a thing of the past. Most of my information came from here:
http://www.unfpa.org/gender/practices2.htm#2
Again, I am so sorry if I offended anyone- my defense mechanisms kicked in and I distanced myself from the topics as best I could, which is never a good way to approach sensitive topics.

How is radical thought/action/practices linked to revolutionary transformation in the work of Shirley Chisholm and her presidential campaign in ’72?
How is it linked in Winona LaDuke’s writings/actions?

Can revolutionary transformation occur when working within the system? How do Chisholm and/or Laduke demonstrate this?

What is Winona LaDuke’s vision of social transformation? How do women fit into this? What kind of feminism does LaDuke promote?

Also, you could write on any of the questions I gave you to discuss in small group.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me or stop by my office hours (Mondays 4-6) with any questions.

So i know there has been a lot of disgust when it comes to the Hilary Clinton Nutcracker and "if there was a Obama doll with racial affliction there would be accusations of being racist!" Well, personally to some it comes down to having a sense of humor. I like Hilary and I think the nutcracker doll is humorous, as do some others who like Hilary. I also like obama. It doesn't have to be seen as negative, but when you put that spin on it of course it is negative!

So here is some Obama merchandise Urban Outfitters is selling. What do you think? (notice the fashionable use of Ebonics for the only black presidential hopeful).

Hi all,

Because the writing assignment for last night's class is due right before your radical 5 page essay is due, I thought I would make it a little easier on you. If you would like, you may use ONE (and only one) of your responses to the writing assignment question as part of your larger, 5 page paper. Three caveats: 1. You must make sure to use 3 sources total (so, you could use Solanas, Willis and Third as your three sources for the essay), 2. You must still answer the question in the writing assignment, and 3. YOU MAY NOT USE BOTH RESPONSES AS THE BULK OF YOUR 5 PAGE ESSAY--YOU MAY ONLY USE ONE RESPONSE.

Now, you could do this in a number of ways. You could use the question from the writing assignment as the main topic for your 5 page essay. Or, you could use your response to the question as part of a larger or different topic about radical feminism.

Hi everyone! My friend is organizing an event called Tent State the will coincide with Campus to Capital Week. Here is some of our mission statement/background information:

Tent State is an idea that started at Rutger’s University in 2003. Tent State will be a visual protest against the complacent campus lifestyle of many of the students at the University of Minnesota. Our goal is to create an alternative campus that for one week will be the site of many events such as speakers, forums, documentaries, teach-ins, music, art, and much more. All of these events will take place outside Northrop Mall, a highly traversed area at the university. To further create a sense of community we will be setting up tents and camping out in the area, hence the name tent state. Many of the events will be put on by both student groups and local community groups. Through this event we hope to engage students in their community be presenting them with many issues that face the world today and then showing them groups that allow them to act on these issues.

I wanted to encourage everyone to get involved if they are interested (check out the group on facebook or email me) and to let me know if you know of or are part of a group that may be interested. We are also looking for volunteers to conduct short workshops. These can be on just about anything you want (whether it involves yoga, art, or anything) so if you have a special skill or know someone who does, let me know!

Several of you have asked for a little more direction in your assigned 5-page essays for the Radical and Revolutionary Sections. You may still choose to organize and write about the essays in other ways, but if you are struggling with a topic for the radical section and would like more direction, you may write on one of the following options:

1. In her essay on “Consciousness-raising: A Radical Weapon, Kathie Sarachild defines radical in the following way:

“Before we go any further, let's examine the word "radical." It is a word that is often used to suggest extremist, but actually it doesn't mean that. The dictionary says radical means root, coming from the Latin word for root. And that is what we meant by calling ourselves radicals. We were interested in getting to the roots of problems in society. You might say we wanted to pull up weeds in the garden by their roots, not just pick off the leaves at the top to make things look good momentarily. Women's Liberation was started by women who considered themsleves radicals in this sense.

Choose three of the manifestos/political statements in the Sisterhood Section (FIOT) and explain what they see as the 'root' of the problem (why are women oppressed?). Also explore why, according to Sarachild and some of these other thinkers, getting at the "root" of the problem is so important.

2. Another important element of being “radical that many of the authors have discussed is the value of personal experience for creating political agendas and understanding the world and our place in it. Women’s personal (lived) experiences of oppression serve as foundations for new forms of knowledge and for transformative strategies. And sharing those experiences in consciousness-raising and study groups was central to many radical feminist groups.

Choose three of the readings in the radical section and critically explore how they promote the value of women’s experiences for feminism. How can experience serve as a source of authority? How is this potentially radical? What are the problems with using women’s experience as a source of authority?

Hey everybody,

This doesn't have to do with class content but I found it interesting. I don't know if any of you have heard about the new Central Corridor project that was recently approved. The state wants to put a light rail line connecting St. paul to Minneaoplis. Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, I read an article in the Pioneer Press yesterdeay and found many problems with the idea. The line would run from the new Twins ballpark to Union Depot in St. Paul, with a six block chunk of the line along Washington Ave closed to traffic. For more info, see the article in the Pioneer Press at http://www.twincities.com/ci_8386089. Some "major issues" still have to be ironed out and these are most definitely major - streets being altered, parking eliminated, and maybe even closing the Washington Ave bridge to automobile traffic. I just wanted other opinions on the subject - I am not in favor of the idea; I think there are better things to spend our money on and lots of issues with this plan.
