What's sex go to do with... the wedding party?

Last time I posted on wedding dresses, but lately I got to think about the wedding party. I have noticed that there is hardly ever a male maid of honor or bridesmaid, but something I have never seen is a female best man or grooms men. What does the politics of sex have to do with this? What does this say about gender rules? Does it say men can't have female best friends, or is it just the woman doesn't want to wear a tux at the wedding? Who says grooms have to be in tuxes and bridesmaids in dresses? Why isn't there a mix of boys and girls in the bridal parties for either side? How does society influence this?
